There are many other translations available, but this edition comes directly from the Hebrew with an easy to read format. Careful attention is given to be accurate and true to all of the Bible's teachings.

Imaginative Sci-Fi with an Action Packed Plot

The imagination in this book is phenomenal. The trains, the travel, the monk bugs, the angels, the Guardians, the absolute everything! This book is full of wonders in the same way I’d expect from a fantasy novel, except this is science fiction and also packed with tech, fast-paced action and a handful of characters whose adventures suck you in from the first page and leave you helpless to put it down, like some poor railhead stuck riding the K-Bahn’s forever after.

Zen is not much of a hero - or, rather, he's not very heroic. He’s a thief, he’s also selfish, self-absorbed and doesn’t really care about anyone except himself. He has a very hardworking older sister and a mother prone to outbreaks of paranoia that saw Zen running from place to place throughout his childhood. He doesn’t think much of his home life and he isn’t fond of his home world, a run down dump at the end of a branch line. The only thing he really likes are the K-trains, great locomotives that can travel vast distances across the galaxy using the K-Bahn gates that somehow pass out of time to skip from one planet to another, countless light years away.

He has no ambitions, no real future, no plans to do anything but keep on thieving for the rest of his life, until Raven finds him and gives him a special mission.

It’s hard not to like Zen, even though he’s not particularly honorable or good. But he is interesting as he tries to work out what Raven really wants, while making unexpected friends with Nova and exploring the unimaginably rich world of the Imperial Noon family. I loved seeing the galaxy through Zen’s eyes, because despite everything he’s not jaded or bored, instead he still recognizes wonder when he sees it and knows how to appreciate it. I completely understood his enthusiasm for the locos and the excitement of arriving on new worlds, especially the forgotten ones along the Dog Star Line.

I loved the trains, the sentient locos that are the only things capable of passing through the gates. They each have distinct personalities and stories of their own, especially the sinister Thought Fox. I also really liked the friends Zen encounters on the way, particularly Nova and Flex. Those two added a new dimension to Zen’s world and taught him the most about looking beyond himself, even if he will never be entirely heroic.

The plot moves swiftly, unfolding relevant information only when needed and steadily gathering pace. There were plenty of times when I didn’t have a clue where it was all going to end, and there are plenty of dark surprises amongst the imaginative wonders. The ending itself left me wanting so much more – not least a K-train of my own to explore the galaxy with.

If you’re looking for something overflowing with imagination, full of intriguing characters and a fast-paced, absorbing plot, then this book delivers all of that and more. Which is just what I’d expect from Philip Reeve. Clever and exciting, the only bad thing about it all is that it had to end. I really hope this isn’t the last I’ll see of this amazing galaxy.

Imaginative

Railheads, station angels, taggers, and sentient trains all vibrate with life in the plausible future universe that Philip Reeve has created in Railhead. There are touches of mathematics and science that add credibility, as Isaac Asimov did decades ago. And there is a charming, rakish energy that is reminiscent of Douglas Adams' work. But make no mistake, Reeve's imagination and the world he crafts are quite singular.

The story begins with young Zen Starling's version of normal. It is different than ours in the 21st century, but similar enough to be comprehensible. Reeve slowly accretes layers of detail, easing us into his world in a way that slowly stretches our comprehension and understanding. He also is adept at imbuing characters with distinct traits and personalities that make the events that are unfolding pretty credible because we've become invested in the fate of his characters and are actively involved in trying to predict just where Reeve is taking us.

I'm anti-spoiler, so this next will be a little vague. But I cannot write this without taking some time to discuss the genius that is Reeve's imagining of the trains. They are wonderful, awe-inspiring, and quite breathtaking -- the trains your heart and mind team up to imagine when you visit rolling stock reposing on sections of rail in the summer sun, with rust and patina burnished by time. Reeve’s brief paeans to trains make me wonder whether he rode the rails and whether railsong entered his youthful dreams.

Overall, plot, pacing, characters, and dialogue all were finely balanced. There was one section midway through the book that dragged a bit. Perhaps it was a purposeful diversion to make the next big plot point more impactful, and was just rather drawn out for my taste. Otherwise, this book was a pleasure, beginning to end, and leaving the world of those magnificent trains and re-entering 2016 was somewhat jolting.

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 largely for language and the thought that went into the trains.

I liked this book because it shows the syntheses that have been done in a simple way and explains the rethosynthetic pathway and some important aspects on reactions or chirality. For my class I covered all reagents with post-its and it helped me remember them later.

this is IT!

Im not big on writing reviews, and hardly ever do. I just wanted to add to the previous reviewers comments and say that this is hands down the best organic text available today. I fell in love with it when I used it for a presentation. The way it is written makes it read like a story. The explanations are comprehensive and clear. Every time I had a question, he promptly answered it in his book. I am jealous of his students who get to work for him. He must be a fantastic teacher!

Good over-view for many world faiths. Only issue i have is on page 143, where it states "The stone was the sacred stone upon which Abraham nearly sacrificed his son, Ishmael."

Ishmael? Does Islam hold the belief that it was this son (and not Isaac, as the Bible reports)?

Tyree's awards include Michigan Artist of the Year and International Artist.

About the Author
J. H. Shapiro discovered Tyree Guyton's art while a docent at Michigan State University's art museum. She has been a social worker for the Department of Medicine at MI State. During a year in Hawaii, she volunteered at the Waikiki Aquarium and wrote about marine animals. She now lives and writes in Portland, Oregon, and leads school tours through the Portland Art Museum.

Really good

I gave this book to my eight- year old granddaughter in San Francisco without any introduction and watched as she lay on the floor, reading it straight through despite being pummeled by her little brother while "Charlie & Lola" echoed from the TV . She read it straight through and when finished, looked up at me and declared "That was really good." To me, that is a real endorsement.
Knowing the book's background, I was moved by its ability to deal simply and honestly with the facts of this page of Detroit's history. I was taken aback by the beauty of the words - esp. the rhyming refrain - and the graphics which captured Tyree Guyton's vision. This book is quite an accomplishment - in terms of language, narrative , color, graphics, characterization. Considering the serious subject matter - this book accomplishes a lot . It was "really good" -- for an eight year old or a sixty-five year old.

Inspirational and Imaginative

I read Magic Trash to students in grades K - 2. They commented that they liked the pictures and they liked how Tyree's grandfather helped him. There is a lot to relate to in the story, that follows Tyree from elementary school through his success as an artist. The book led to discussions about dreams, mentoring, perseverance and reality (Tyree works a few jobs to pay the bills before he returns to his art). Students were fascinated by the illustrations showing the things Tyree made from found 'trash'. They also enjoyed reciting the poetic refrains. In addition, the book captures some of the turmoil that Detroit experienced in the late 1960's and how it changed the city. Secondary lessons were about cooperation and teamwork and how the neighborhood worked together to bring about change. The book was meaningful and inspirational and sparked the children's imaginations.

My church does a "found" art project every year and this book is perfect for the children's story. The illustrations are quite nice but are hard to see at any distance and I wish more pictures of the Guyton's work were included.

Need self-improvement? Here's the real deal!

As a professional helper myself I am rarely, if ever, impressed with self-help books. Changepower is the exception. As a counselor herself with a wealth of experience, Meg Selig provides techniques that are used by professional helpers. I like the upbeat tone of the book. The strategies are easy to follow. I have recommended this book to my students as well as clients. Most of today's "get real" self-improvement books are to embarrassing to recommend. This book will cost you a lot less than seeing a therapist and could provide you with all the help you need. And yes it is written by the same Meg Selig that writes the spirited blogs for Psychology Today.

Change in progress

I don't read many self-help books,but I thought, "Okay, I'll use it to bump up my motivation to lose the five pounds I gained over Christmas. By the time I finished I was revved up to tackle the massive clutter in my basement! (I've already dropped the weight, and the basement is coming along.) Selig has a very readable style and a step-by-step approach, backed up with the psychological research and enriched with fascinating stories of success (and failure) from her students. She guides you to reflect on your own sources of motivation and provides a great, practical "toolbox." The book is a good companion to revisit when the "change" energy flags.

Based on the latest science of habit change

I love this book. Most books on this subject are pure hype, telling you to go eat nothing but grapefruit or "just quit" smoking (which is fine for a few, but....)
Meg Selig knows all the research about exactly how to set up the stages of change for yourself--the stages that successful "changers" have done with whatever habit they are breaking. She makes it simple. If you understand those stages, you know what you're going through, you won't backslide as easily, and you can understand the occasional lapse and still keep going toward your goal. Also, the author is a cheerleader all the way; the book is very optimistic.
