Managing Customer Value, by Dilip Soman, Sara N-marandi

This book is written for students - as well as employees of organizations - who have some previous exposure to principles of marketing. Its main objectives are to introduce the key marketing principles that govern the interactions between consumers and the goods and services being offered to them, to show how these principles can be used to gain a deeper understanding of the consumer's decision-making cycle, and to apply this knowledge in developing micro-marketing tactics. In doing so, the book offers an alternative perspective to the general practice of marketing products to consumers. Instead of applying the principles of mass marketing to a general group of consumers with similar characteristics, it aims to capture the right consumer at the right time. This is achieved by gaining a deep understanding of consumers' purchasing behavior as they progress through different stages of affiliation with the product or service. These stages are simply a set of thoughts, experiences and feelings that consumers encounter when faced with a purchase decision. Therefore, the major unifying theme between all the observable consumer behaviors and marketing tactics is micro-marketing.

The Delusion of Disbelief: Why the New Atheism is a Threat to Your Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness, by David Aikman

The last few years have seen a great assault upon faith in the publishing world, with an influx of books denouncing religious belief. While attacks on faith are not new, what is notable about these books—several of which have hit the bestseller charts—is their contention that belief in God is not only deluded, but dangerous to society.
In The Delusion of Disbelief, former Time senior correspondent and bestselling author David Aikman offers an articulate, reasoned response to four writers at the forefront of today's anti-faith movement: Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens.
Aikman shines a light on the arguments of these “evangelists of atheism,” skillfully exposing their errors and inconsistencies. He explains what appears to motivate atheists and their followers; encourages Christians to look closely at what they believe; arms readers with powerful arguments in response to critics of faith; and exposes the social problems that atheism has caused throughout the world.
Aikman also takes on one of the most controversial questions of our time: Can American liberties survive in the absence of widespread belief in God on the part of the nation's people? The answer to that question, says Aikman, is critically important to your future.
The Delusion of Disbelief is a thoughtful, intelligent resource for anyone concerned about the increasingly strident and aggressive new attacks on religious belief. It is the book that every person of faith should read—and give away.

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist and biographer Aikman offers a spiritedly unsympathetic review of the new atheism represented by Daniel Dennett (Breaking the Spell), Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Sam Harris (Letter to a Christian Nation), and Christopher Hitchens (God Is Not Great). As might be expected from any one author simultaneously engaging four opponents, Aikman struggles at times amid a flurry of arguments and counterarguments. Still, many of his criticisms score on their targets. Aikman reads the new atheists in historical perspective as the heirs of Voltaire, Marx, Feuerbach and Mencken, as well as in their immediate setting of post-9/11 fears of religious extremism and discontent with the Bush administration and its perceived evangelical leanings. While not an expert on all the issues the new atheists raise—chapters on science and biblical criticism rely heavily on arguments made by other reviewers—Aikman speaks effectively to the interplay between religious belief (or disbelief) and politics, whether among the American founders or in contemporary North Korea. But after criticizing the new atheists' inflammatory rhetoric, Aikman does not always rise to a higher level himself: references to Harris's drug use and Hitchens's communist past and drinking habits become gratuitous. Excellent to an extent
By Paul Vjecsner
The author might be said to be a jack-of-all-trades but master of none in his relatively thorough examination of the subject from many angles but with attending shortcomings.

The title of the book, The Delusion of Disbelief, can itself be seen as tellingly contradictory. "Delusion" implies falsehood, here of disbelief, the falsehood in turn implying the truth of belief. However, belief by its very meaning is only a supposition of truth. The author indeed turns his belief into near certainty at the close of the book (p.211), contending that the non-occurrence of the Resurrection is a "highly improbable notion". This sounds a lot like Dawkins's holding the existence of God to be very, very improbable, and it rests of course on the author's trust in the veracity of his sources.

Another, striking, example of the author's less than reliable though extensive background-support is his (p.174) placing David Hume into the "nineteenth" or "twentieth centuries". It couldn't be a typo, of a spelled out number at that, since all other authors listed there do belong into those centuries, and it is more remarkable considering that the author teaches history. That is how one's confidence in this book, detailed and well written otherwise, is diminished.

That the author's presentation is slanted toward Christianity is in fact not very difficult to perceive. He writes (p.186), "the world in which we all live today owes its greatest attributes to Christianity", continuing: "Historical facts...show that our modern age with its science and technology", etc., would not exist without it. Of course, a historical fact may not exist without a preceding historical fact, but it needn't therefore owe "its greatest attributes" to the other. The author, however, attempts to show that after the demise of the Roman Empire it was Christianity that brought about progress in such as science and in emphasis on reason.

Interestingly, he again displays a lapse in his historical accuracy, speaking (p.187) of a supposed Europe of "the Dark Ages" as reemerging "in early medieval times". The Dark Ages concern exactly the early, if not all of, medieval times. He correctly notes that "classical learning was preserved [in] the Christian monasteries", but is it true that (p.190) "from medieval times onward, Christianity stressed the vital connection of reason with the Christian faith"? The 15th edition of Encyclopedia Britannica states that in the 15th century logicians "asserted the essential disparity of faith and reason" (Middle Ages, p.163).

And the historical disparity between Christian faith and the sciences is common knowledge. Not only with respect to Galileo. The greatest ancient scientific accomplishments took place in pagan states like Greece and Rome, or places like Egypt and Babylonia. It was some of these accomplishments that was preserved in the monasteries. And the Renaissance, which marked the rebirth of scientific inquiry, took its model from antiquity, as symbolized by Raphael's "The School of Athens".

Notwithstanding the religious bias by the reviewed author, he does in general a wonderful job of confuting the claims of "the Four Horsemen" of atheism. Although reconciling science with an organized religion may be futile, despite allegations to the contrary, it is another question whether science can be reconciled with theism, and whether correspondingly some purported scientific findings are incorrect. On my mind is Darwinism in particular, sparsely dealt with by the author. That results can be obtained along these lines as to theism opposite atheism, I endeavored to point out in my other reviews here, as well as in my book, which can be located on Amazon.com, if I'll be allowed to again mention it.

About the Author

William S. Klug is an Emeritus Professor of Biology at The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College) in Ewing, New Jersey, where he served as Chair of the Biology Department for 17 years. He received his B.A. degree in Biology from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Prior to coming to The College of New Jersey, he was on the faculty of Wabash College as an Assistant Professor, where he first taught genetics, as well as general biology and electron microscopy. His research interests have involved ultrastructural and molecular genetic studies of development, utilizing oogenesis in Drosophila as a model system. He has taught the genetics course as well as the senior capstone seminar course in Human and Molecular Genetics to undergraduate biology majors for over four decades. He was the recipient in 2001 of the first annual teaching award given at The College of New Jersey, granted to the faculty member who “most challenges students to achieve high standards.” He also received the 2004 Outstanding Professor Award from Sigma Pi International, and in the same year, he was nominated as the Educator of the Year, an award given by the Research and Development Council of New Jersey.

Michael R. Cummings is Research Professor in the Department of Biological, Chemical, and Physical Sciences at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois. For more than 25 years, he was a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences and in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has also served on the faculties of Northwestern University and Florida State University. He received his B.A. from St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In addition to this text and its companion volumes, he has also written textbooks in human genetics and general biology for nonmajors. His research interests center on the molecular organization and physical mapping of the heterochromatic regions of human acrocentric chromosomes. At the undergraduate level, he teaches courses in Mendelian and molecular genetics, human genetics, and general biology, and has received numerous awards for teaching excellence given by university faculty, student organizations, and graduating seniors.

Charlotte A. Spencer is a retired Associate Professor from the Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She has also served as a faculty member in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta. She received her B.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of British Columbia and her Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Alberta, followed by postdoctoral training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Her research interests involve the regulation of RNA polymerase II transcription in cancer cells, cells infected with DNA viruses, and cells traversing the mitotic phase of the cell cycle. She has taught courses in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and oncology, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, she has written booklets in the Prentice Hall Exploring Biology series, which are aimed at the undergraduate nonmajor level.

Michael A. Palladino is Dean of the School of Science and Professor of Biology at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. He received his B.S. degree in Biology from Trenton State College (now known as The College of New Jersey) and his Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of Virginia. He directs an active laboratory of undergraduate student researchers studying molecular mechanisms involved in innate immunity of mammalian male reproductive organs and genes involved in oxygen homeostasis and ischemic injury of the testis. He has taught a wide range of courses for both majors and nonmajors and currently teaches genetics, biotechnology, endocrinology, and laboratory in cell and molecular biology. He has received several awards for research and teaching, including the 2009 Young Investigator Award of the American Society of Andrology, the 2005 Distinguished Teacher Award from Monmouth University, and the 2005 Caring Heart Award from the New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research. He is co-author of the undergraduate textbook Introduction to Biotechnology, Series Editor for the Benjamin Cummings Special Topics in Biology booklet series, and author of the first booklet in the series, Understanding the Human Genome Project.

Impressed with the clarity
By suzlv
I was educated many years ago, way before they elaborated the human genome. I felt I needed to learn the language of genetics in order to understand current medical literature, so I purchased various books in this field. Unfortunately, all were above my head until I purchased this one. I have just begun to read the book, but my initial impression is that I will finally understand the subject. The book really does get down to basics and has a decent index as well. Highly recommended.

Poorly Written
By Dan5280
This has to be the most poorly written text book I've ever used. My biggest frustration is reading about key concepts (in bold) that are left undefined while continuing to discuss the topic in some abstract way. Some of the glossary terms are poorly defined as well, where 20 seconds with google gives correct, succinct answers. As a Pre-Med student, I've seen my share of biology text books. I've never been so frustrated trying to learn concepts that, quite frankly, aren't that complicated. As a side note, the student handbook is just as poorly written.

This book needs a lot of work :-(
By Just another college student
I had to use this book (9th edition) for my genetics class. It's an interesting an easy read but does not cover the mathematics behind genetics very well. If you are looking for the "big picture," then this text will probably help. However, if you need a text to help you understand the specifics and math behind genetics problems, then search elsewhere. Like some of the other reviewers have mentioned, the web site is totally useless, and this book is going to need a lot of editing before it is up to par with other genetics texts.
