Shon provides an excellent guide on how to read journal articles. The reading code sheet helps to demystify the role of journal articles as proposals to knowledge and journals as forums for debate. I have used the book over the last five years with my students (many of whom are international and studying in a second language) with great success. The book has helped students to develop their critical thinking, reading and writing skills and when it comes to writing a dissertation they have used the code sheet in their own writing. This is an excellent ‘how-to’ book on the skill of reading and writing critical literature reviews. Its practical guidance is offered in clear and accessible ways. About the Author

Phillip C. Shon received his M.A. and Ph.D. in criminal justice from the University of Illinois (Chicago); he also holds an M.A. in linguistics and a B.A. in philosophy from Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago). He is currently an associate professor of criminology at University of Ontario Institute of Technology where he teaches courses in homicide, criminological theory, and integrating projects (capstone course). He is the author of Language and Demeanor in Police-Citizen Encounters. Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 2008; Respect, Defense, and Self-Identity: Profiling Parricide in Nineteenth-Century America, 1852-1899. New York: Peter Lang, 2014. He is a co-editor (with Dragan Milovanovic) of Serial Killers: Understanding Lust Murders. (eds). Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, 2006. For fun, he lifts weights and watches Asian gangster movies (not at the same time). He still has aspirations of becoming a professional wrestler and a long-haul trucker someday.

Excellent Content - BUT less moving than the 1st Edition.

This is a must have book for any student needing to write social science papers and any instructor who assigns those papers. My only complaint - I prefer the first edition. The important how to content is still in this edition, but I thought it was edited down too much. The first edition (the one with the green cover) has more depth. For example, the first edition has a graphic and moving story about the author working at a gas station as a student and having to clean poo off the bathroom walls. He uses that experience to explain why quality academic writing is important to him. To me, this 2nd edition is a good how to book, while the 1st edition was a how to book that demonstrated the practical intersection of social science and social justice.

Critically Important!

I am the director of a small learning center that teaches a wide spectrum of academic skills to students. Last night I was working with one of our students on the ACT. We used the "REAL ACT" guide, which I have always liked, and then went to Erica Meltzer's Complete Guide for more skill and strategy for the test.WOW! As usual Erica came to rescue, providing strategies for students at every level of skill development. We have a long history of great success with middle school test preparation, but using Erica's books has taken us to a much higher level with high school students! I cannot recommend her work OR her website highly enough. Check out [...]and BUY HER BOOKS to help your son or daughter!

Next to the Official Guides, Meltzer's books are the best.

As an English tutor and teacher, this book has been invaluable in terms of explaining how to approach the various multiple-choice questions test takers encounter (ex: direct, inference, tone, vocabulary, etc.) I'm a fan of Meltzer's last two books (The Complete Guides to SAT Reading and ACT Writing) and this book does not disappointment. As her previous books, this book is also use-friendly for teachers and beneficial for students.

Her two practice tests at the end of this book also add extra assignments to the dearth of official and official looking ACT tests available.

Yes, the book has some typos and the her writing isn't the most gripping nor compelling work you will read; however, in terms of content and strategy, I don't know of a better book to supplement the reading section of the Real ACT Prep Guide.

it is great that author is utilizing some great tech from the ...

I really want to give this book five stars, but it has two significant drawbacks. First off, it is absolutely clear that the author is deeply knowledgeable about the subject matter & the tech involved. Also, the author's approach is rock solid in my opinion; I am a big fan of using projects to learn underlying tech. Finally, it is great that author is utilizing some great tech from the PyData world & the Spark world.

The drawbacks, however, are significant. First, the code as presented (at least in the ebook) is in serious need of formatting. The way that the code is presented adds an unnecessary layer of confusion. I'm all for iteratively updating the code as we proceed, but it has to be clear what is happening. The lack of good formatting just tripped me up.

Second, it is not clear that this book was well edited. The author does a great job not assuming much prior knowledge and does a great job in explaining concepts, jargon, and acronyms. I also like the graphics used to visualize ideas and architecture. There are, however, inconsistencies. One example that jumps to mind is in Chapter 3 when shifting from writing the scripts to harvesting data from Twitter (scripts that do not seem to have been tested) to experimenting with Blaze. At the end of "Harvesting and storing data" section it seems as though we will be working with the JSON data, but when we start the "Exploring data using Blaze" section the author is using csv data.

These inconsistencies in the book are huge drawbacks. The blame here should reside with the publisher, since the author has compiled some great material with a great approach to learning the subject matter. If these two drawbacks were fixed, I would happily up this book to 5 stars.

Edit: Why isn't the code available online? Github & Bitbucket both have free public repos. Doesn't make much sense nowadays.

About everything and nothing in particular.

I hoped to learn some details about how to work with Spark in Python, and was disappointed. The author knows some Databases, SQL, some Python, but not too much about Spark. It was a waste of money.

The book is about everything and nothing in particular. Put together some basic principles, some general talk, some screen shots, some diagrams, some Python code, some Twitter API examples, plus wide margins, and you collect enough pages to make a book. Add hot topic "Spark" to the title, and here you are, you have a publication.

This is just terrible.

I don't often leave reviews but I just felt compelled to do so with this book. Here are just a few of my thoughts:
1) The code examples are unreadable.
2) The author skims over important topics in order to squeeze more topics in.
3) The author skims over important details in setting up the environments he describes.
4) Very little of the first few chapters actually deal with Spark, except for some brief examples that are not explained in detail.
Summary: The editors should have taken more time to make sure this is a quality publication. This is just terrible.

I love this Jesus-Centered Bible

I love this Jesus-Centered Bible! This title is not inferring that other Bibles are not Jesus centered. The blue letters in the Old Testament show scriptures that are referring to Jesus and then there are blue boxes at the bottom of the page that shows where that is fulfilled in the New Testament. The added features such as "Reframing Jesus" and the introductions written for each book, really help you see how Jesus is a part of all scripture. This Bible helps you to really study who Jesus is, it helps you to know him and not just know about him. C.H. Spurgeon said that all sermons should make a beeline to the cross. This Bible helps us to see Christ in all the scripture. I salute the team from Group Publishing who worked so passionately on this project,and put their heart and souls into it. The Bible is definitely the book you want to find your heart and soul in!

Where's the "Like" Button?

When I first heard about this Bible and the blue letters in the OT that would highlight anything that related to or pointed to Jesus I remember thinking, "How has no one done this before? This is brilliant!" I was very eager for it to be available so I could dig in and I haven't been disappointed. I can honestly say this Bible has reignited my desire to be in God's Word and I'm learning new things from passages I've read many times before. Read with a pen handy because you'll find yourself making discoveries, connections, and fresh life-applications that you'll want to write down!

I've always loved Bibles. I'm not sure what it is about ...

I've always loved Bibles. I'm not sure what it is about them, but they are so attractive to me. I love the heaviness, the way the thin pages feel on my fingers, the sound the pages make when they turn, and the faithfulness of some of my favorite verses that are found inside.

I've always tended to somehow collect Bibles too, which I think is not that great of a thing to collect being that we really don't need more than one. (And with how easy it is to have more than one translation or paraphrase online today, I don't even see the reason!) But somehow, I still manage to have my little collection. The physical aspects of the Bible will never grow old to me. I guess that's why I get drawn in when a new Bible catches my eye. So today, I'm going to tell you about The Jesus Centered-Bible, which I am really excited about.

I decided that I will walk through all the aspects of this Bible, and then close with a bunch of pictures and commentary featuring some of the aspects that make this Bible so unique.

First, this Bible comes in two different colors: turquoise (which is the one I'm reviewing,) and charcoal.

The Jesus-Centered Study Bible is 6x1.5x9 inches. Which I think is about standard Bible size. It's not compact and it's not study Bible - just the perfect in-between size that makes it great for carrying along. It weights just under 2 pounds. This Bible is the New Living Translation.

My favorite aspects of The Jesus-Centered Bible are the colors and of course, the features that make it easy to see Jesus all throughout the Bible. The Old and New Testaments are color schemed, blue and red/orange respectively. Since I love bright colors, this was pretty exciting to me.

The Jesus-Centered Study Bible introduces "blue text" into the Old Testament. This blue text points out references to Jesus in the OT. What a handy feature! Whenever you come across blue text, there is also a comment box somewhere on the page giving further detail and explanation.

The intros to each book of the Bible are also exciting. These are written by many different individuals, but the folks I am most excited about are Bruxy Cavey, William Paul Young, and Brian Zahnd. Since each book has an intro written by different people, it tends to give such a personal spin on things. I love that some of the authors tie in life experiences, and sometimes even a story of how they saw God working on another's life.

The next thing you'll notice in the Old Testament are grey comment boxes called "Reframing Jesus." In these, you will find the back story, special insights, and further information on context. So while this Bible isn't necessarily a study Bible, it still offers some great aspects of one.

Moving to the New Testament, we find some different features including "The Jesus Questions" which you can see a picture of above. These are circular graphics placed purposefully throughout the NT which ask a mind-probing question for you to think on. I love the way that this grabs your attention and gets your wheels turning.

While the Old Testament featured blue text, the New Testament features red text, and not only when it's Jesus talking! Any references to Jesus' name is also highlighted in red. As the introduction says: "It helps us to zero in on his voice. To live a Jesus-centered life, we pay closer attention to what he says, and what he does."

And lastly, in the New Testament, you will find large sections scattered throughout the pages featuring "Jesus Answers Life's Essential Questions" which correspond to certain verses. Another helpful feature that is super study-Bible like!

At the back of the Bible you have a really nice dictionary and concordance, and also a handy Jesus-Centered Bible-Reading Plan. I am excited about this feature, and am planning on taking advantage of it soon.

You can see through the pages slightly, but not so much that it makes reading difficult. I am a little nervous about writing and highlighting in this Bible due to my fear of leak-through, but I don't really see it being any worse than other Bibles. There is not an excessive amount of margin space for note making, but there is certainly enough to do some!

I love this Bible, and I am excited to be able to add it to my collection where it will life with a few of my other favorite versions/paraphrases. I hope you've found this review helpful, and are inspired to go order your own copy now!

The Missing Link

Where did coaching come from? What were its influences, and its roots?

No one has ever really considered this before, much less documented it.

In this well-written and highly informative book, Leni Wildflower demonstrates considerable scholarship (and knowledge in the field) to answer these questions.

If you are a coach, or you received coaching, this will be of more than passing interest to you. And face it -- these days, especially if you have a corporate job, just about everyone receives coaching of one kind or another.

This is an excellent book.

Disclosure: I know the author personally, and was one of her students at Fielding Graduate University's "Evidence Based Coaching" program. From my own experience, I can say with certainty that Leni is a terrific scholar, teacher, and practitioner.

My only regret was that in the year-long program, I didn't learn 90% of what I learned in the book!

But that may be my fault entirely. I spent most of my time arguing with just about everything Leni had to say. She was very patient and quite a good debater, respectfully countering my points (and teaching me a lot about good coaching in the process!).

My approach to coaching requires a lot more instruction and command-and-control tactics than the type of coaching Leni teaches. Yet I freely admit I have moved much closer to the "Leni" side of the profession after taking the Fielding program, and after reading her book.

Well worth it. I highly recommend this book!

Great Book for Anyone Remotely Interested in Coaching

I am currently a coaching student and bought this book with the idea that I would use this in conjunction with my other textbooks, just another resource. I wasn't necessarily looking forward to opening it, expecting it to read like a textbook. So over Christmas break, at the in-laws, when I needed to look busy so I wouldn't have to help in the kitchen, I cracked this book open and immediately found I was sucked in exploring these characters that helped contribute to what coaching is today. It read more like a story where I was enjoying reading about each individual, the family life they came from (some very unpleasant) and how that brought them to do the great work they did. I was fascinated by the practices and experiments that occurred that gave us great things such as CBT, positive psychology, and a dozen other topics. Great book and I highly recommend.

I bought this for my daughter and her husband, as a gift to have after they took their wedding vows. And, I am so glad I followed the prompting of the Holy Spirit when He said to buy the book, because there are so many questions this new couple have about intimacy, as a married couple. The lovely LaHaye husband and wife writing team do a really wonderful job of teaching people who have very little previous experience about sex, how to navigate those waters and obtain the results God had in mind when He designed our beautiful bodies.
I recommend this as a wedding gift to any Christian couple, or, really, any couple who have waited, because they love God and believe in His teachings, to wait to be intimate until after the wedding vows. The book is a God based teaching about sex. How wonderful is that.

I had to read this book for pre-marital counseling. It's a fitting book for Christian engaged couples seeking to learn more about sex and how to use sex to please each other and glorify God. It has a chapter dedicated to sex education (explaining every part of the male and femal genetalia and its function). It then discusses about sex in a Christian context.

I had an older version of this book in paperback which is falling apart. If you are a Christian man or woman and you truly love your spouse, you will buy this, read it, and put it into practice.
