Amazon.com Review
Take one French food authority and author, one Italian food authority and author, give them a subject like bread and a publisher like Britain's Dorling Kindersley, and the result can't help but be one of the more engaging books on bread and bread baking. DK Publishing is of the seeing-is-believing school of cookbooks, and this philosophy works particularly well in their Ultimate Bread. The opening plates of the world of bread are enough in and of themselves to drive anyone--beginner or expert baker--right into the kitchen.

The "Baking Essentials" section shows and explains the differences in various kinds of flour, wheat and nonwheat, as well as the basic ingredients (yeast, oil, eggs, salt--not a long list) and tools. The "Basic Techniques" section shows you exactly what dough should look like in the various stages of bread production. The photos are so thick with color you can almost touch and smell the dough.

But the majority of the book is dedicated to recipes. Here you will find Country Oatmeal Bread, French Baguettes, Pretzels, Ciabatta, Pain aux Noix, Brioche, Nan, Pita, Corn Bread, and Challah. There are dozens of breads in all, from the very basic to the festive. And finally, there's even a section devoted to problem solving--although the biggest problem you may have is deciding which recipe to start with. --Schuyler Ingle

From Library Journal
Combine DK's gorgeous visuals with two authors skilled in the art of breadmaking, and you have the perfect book for anyone who has ever been afraid to try baking bread. Treuille, who coauthored Le Cordon Bleu Complete Cooking Techniques (Murdoch, 1997), and Ferrigno, whose last cookbook was Pizza, Pasta, and Polenta (Merehurst, 1995), begin with fundamentals such as essential ingredients and equipment before turning to basic techniques such as kneading and using a starter. Recipes for more than 100 different kinds of breads, including quick, flat, and festive breads, are offered. Each recipe has clear, precise step-by-step instructions with both metric and nonmetric measurements and time estimates. While there is no shortage of bread books to choose from, including The Book of Bread (LJ 1/97), which focuses solely on the history of bread, Ultimate Bread is an essential choice for all public libraries and any academic library with an interest in the baking arts.?John Charles, Scottsdale P.L., AZ

The recipes from this book "call out" to you....
By hpybaker@mail.megsinet.net
I loved this book. The pictures are enticing, and the detailed instructions will enable even the most inept baker to produce beautiful and tasty loaves of bread, fromt he very plain to the very festive. It gave me the courage to try making Sourdough from scratch, including the starter. I've been making sourdough every 2-3 days ever since! I would like to caution novice bread bakers that the cooking temps for most of the breads are 425 to 475 degrees, and I was not able to do that in my over or the loaves would burn on the bottom. I baked mine at the traditonal 350 degrees for a longer cooking time and they came out great!

A READER correction.
By H. Juarez
"Page 144 the "Pain D' Epice" French Honey Spice Bread, 1 loaf. Calls for 1 1/2 cups honey, 1 1/3 cups milk, 2 eggs, spices AND 1/2 cup of flour."

Actually, page 144 calls for 3/4 cup plus two table spoons of whole-wheat flour AND 3/4 cup plus two tablespoons of rye flour.

I have baked this twice and it always comes out perfect.

turn on the oven, is baking time!
By M. S.
This is an amazing book. It is so complete and detailed.
My previous experiences in bread baking were with betty crocker. I liked the recipes but I wanted to go a step further. With so many books about baking bread, it was a hard choice but I decided on this one because I saw that it was filled with pictures. I'm so glad that I chose this 'cause it is indeed a great book. The recipes are incredible and the techniques also.
The book starts with a "gallery of breads", beautiful pictures of french, english, italian, european and middle eastern breads.
Then it shows different types of flours (with more pictures), then the techniques step by step on how to prepare the yeast, how to make a starter, mixing, kneading, shaping and baking. Photos of different kinds of glazing and toppings follow this chapter. Then the recipes. I think I've tried every recipe that is in this book. Not one of them turned out bad. They were espectacular. Outside and inside.
I cannot recommend this book enough.

Praise for the first novel in the Teodor Szacki series:

"In Entanglement Miloszewski takes an engaging look at modern Polish society in this stellar first in a new series starring Warsaw prosecutor Teodor Szacki. Readers will want to see more of the complex, sympathetic Szacki."—Publishers Weekly

It is spring 2009, and prosecutor Szacki is no longer working in Warsaw—he has said goodbye to his family and to his career in the capital and moved to Sandomierz, a picturesque town full of churches and museums. Hoping to start a "brave new life," Szacki instead finds himself investigating a strange murder case in surroundings both alien and unfriendly.

The victim is found brutally murdered, her body drained of blood. The killing bears the hallmarks of legendary Jewish ritual slaughter, prompting a wave of anti-Semitic paranoia in the town, where everyone knows everyone. The murdered woman's husband is bereft, but when Szacki discovers that she had a lover, the husband becomes the prime suspect. Before there's time to arrest him, he is found murdered in similar circumstances. In his investigation Szacki must wrestle with the painful tangle of Polish–Jewish relations and something that happened more than sixty years earlier.

Zygmunt Miloszewski was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1975. His first novel The Intercom was published in 2005 to high acclaim. In 2006 he published The Adder Mountains; in 2010, the crime novel Entanglement; and this year its sequel, A Grain of Truth.

From Booklist
Polish mystery writer Miloszewski’s first novel, Entanglement (2010), earned the High Calibre Award and was made into a movie. This second in the series finds state prosecutor Teodor Szacki tackling anti-Semitism in Poland. Szacki has left Warsaw after ending his marriage and settled in Sandomierz, a picturesque town with beautiful churches and museums. As an outsider, he is not welcomed by the residents. When a woman is found dead with her body completely drained of blood, Szacki investigates, despite the lack of cooperation from the local police. The killing looks like ritual slaughter, and it triggers anti-Semitic paranoia in the close-knit community. Szacki must face the painful history of Polish-Jewish relations and the aftermath of an event that occurred 60 years earlier. Miloszewski’s compelling mystery offers a revealing glimpse of life in modern Poland, a country still dealing with its complicated past. --Barbara Bibel

Review
PRAISE FOR ENTANGLEMENT (978-1904738-442) "Miloszewski takes an engaging look at modern Polish society in this stellar first in a new series starring Warsaw prosecutor Teodor Szacki. Readers will want to see more of the complex, sympathetic Szacki." Publishers Weekly "ENTANGLEMENT has everything I want from a thriller. It opens with a murder and quickly develops into a fast-moving and tightly plotted whodunit with a host of colourful characters and vivid descriptions of contemporary Cracow. But it's the unsatisfactory personal life and emotional turmoil of its hero, State Prosecutor Teodor Szacki that steal centre stage." Oxford Times

Miloszewski has won the Polityka Passport for Polish literature. He s also twice won the High Calibre Award for the best Polish crime novel and earned two nominations to the French Prix du Polar Europeen for the best European crime novel.

Revenge is sweet
By Sandy Harcourt
Zygmunt Miloszewski's `A Grain of Truth' is what Bitter Lemon Press is all about - the cream of European detective fiction perfectly translated into English. Among English detective writers, only P.D. James matches Miloszewski's elegance and style of plot and writing. Teodor Szacki, the cultured, thoughtful, lonely protagonist is James' Adam Dalgliesh.
If not for Bitter Lemon Press, much of the best of modern European literature - yes, whodunits can be literature - would be unavailable to us. As it is, we have a classic tale of gruesome murders, jealousy and long-simmering hate. Set in Sandomierz, a claustrophobic small-town in Poland, the story has the added ingredient of continuing anti-Semitic bigotry in this country of so many of the Nazi extermination camps.
May there be as many more murder cases for Szacki to unravel as Dalgliesh has solved over the years.

Second in the series
By Jill Meyer
"A Grain of Truth", by Polish author Zygmunt Miloszewski, is the second in his Teodor Szacki series. Set in Poland, Szaki is a Warsaw-born state prosecutor, who after his personal life takes a hit in Warsaw, moves to a beautiful town, Sandomierz, to "start over". He brings, along with his battered feelings, his well-earned reputation as a crime-solver. And there are some real crimes to be solved in the city of Sandomierz.

Sandomierz is located in southeast Poland and is a real city with a rather interesting history. It was the home, before WW2, of a fairly large Jewish population and a visitor can find today remnants of that society. Most of the Jews of Sandomierz and the surrounding area were killed by the German occupiers, and the complicity of the native Polish Catholic has been questioned in the past 70 years. Certainly, the few Jewish survivors who returned after the war were not welcomed home by the Polish Catholics who had, in many cases, appropriated their homes and businesses. That's a different story from the three murders that occur in the city in 2008 that Szaki and his joint legal/police team are charged with solving. But the problems of the past directly affect the crimes of today, as Teodor Szaki discovers.

Sandomierz, the real place, is home to a real church with anti-Semitic art work on the walls. One large picture shows medieval Jews engaging in blood lust; killing Christians for their blood in rather horrifying ways. Another large picture shows 365 days of the year and the ghastly deaths of saints on each day. This blood-libel myth, combined with murders of three Polish Catholics, sends Szaki looking in directions not normally indicated in a murder investigation. All three murders were done in ways that would indicate a Jewish killer. In modern day Poland, in a city with it's own dubious history of anti-Semitism, bringing up the sins of the past is troublesome part of the case.

Author Miloszewski does an admirable job combining the Poland of today with the one of the past. His characters are splendidly drawn and are all interesting. The plot is somewhat lacking in coherence, which may be more the problem of the translator than of the author. The somewhat-incoherence of the plot is not off-putting; it's just sort of there around the edges. The reader may question a minor plot point that doesn't seem to fit. The book was probably a bit better in the original Polish.

But "A Grain of Truth" is well worth reading. I'm going back and reading the first in the series - "Entanglement" - and I hope Miloszewski writes more in the series.

A Tangled History/Mystery
By Kindle Customer
I know, two five stars in a row......but this book is superb on every level.
First the characters...Prosecutor Teodor Szack, forty years of age, successful in Warsaw, successful in a provincial district, divorces his wife and relocates. His character's view of the rule of law, the Republic, his relationship with his daughter, and the way he carries out his duties make him a fascinating protagonist. The secondary characters-the suspect(s), a police Inspector who tantalizingly may or may not be Jewish, his bosses who happen to be female, and his lover are all extremely well drawn.
Next, a tutorial on the tangled history between Poles and Jews. He considers the phenomenon of the "blood libel," and nascent anti-Semitism in a country virtually without Jews. The grim picture is offset by the optimism of an Israeli Rabbi, of Polish descent, who has "returned" to Poland. His perspective and cautious optimism prevent this book from becoming too one dimensional.
Finally, the mystery is extremely well written. The plot is outstanding. The misdirection is fair to the reader. The solution does not appear contrived. In fact, it was always there awaiting discovery by a particularly discerning reader. (Not this one).
This was simply a very enjoyable experience. The translation is also superb

Good All-Around book for tuning your MGB
By Gabe Donica
How to Power-Tune MGB 4-cylinder engines is a good all-around book, although some of the language can be confusing. A good point about this book is that it does not only focus on the engine, but on exhaust, intake, tires, carburation, etc. It tells you exact brands that are good, and that is also nice. However, as this book is produced in England, many parts from companies are not available. I highly reccommend this book to anyone owning an MGB.

There are many sources for power tuning the MGB, and I have read them. This book came highly recommended to me, and in fact: 'This is the best source'. Oriental Rugs: An Illustrated Lexicon of Motifs, Materials, and Origins, by Peter F. Stone

This monumental reference work—long awaited by collectors and scholars—fills an important gap in the available literature on oriental rugs.

Lavishly illustrated with over 1000 photographs and drawings, it offers clear and precise definitions for the rug and textile terms in use across a broad swath of the globe—from Morocco to Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus region, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China. Covering priceless museum-quality rug traditions as well as modern centers of production, Oriental Rugs: An Illustrated Lexicon of Motifs, Materials, and Origins draws on classical scholarship as well as current terminology in use among producers and traders in these areas today. It focuses primarily on the rich hand-knotting and hand-weaving traditions of the Near East and Central Asia, but also includes some examples of Scandinavian and Native American weavings.

Oriental rugs are receiving ever-increasing attention and recognition in the field of art history. Tribal weavings especially have become a focus for new research, and Oriental Rugs provides a new understanding of many distinctive traditions that were previously understudied, such as the weavings of southwest Persia, Baluchistan and Kurdistan. This concise oriental rug reference book is a must-have for scholars and anyone serious about collecting rugs, selling rugs or the rug trade in general. Additional reference information also includes:

  • Foreign terms
  • Place names
  • The Oriental Rug lexicon
  • Museums with notable rug collections

"Nothing comparable now exists in the English language." —Walter Denny, University of Massachusetts at Amherst

"Rug names are, most often and very confusing, especially for the novice collector, spelled different depending on the dealer or author. Peter F. Stones book and lexicon fills that gap by providing the most common spellings and alternatives in each paragraph of the lexicon." —Jozan.net blog

Wonderful and thorough rug resource.
By Lisa Wagner (Rug Chick)
I own a lot of rug books, and several of Peter Stone's past works. This is a culmination of past research, and is packaged in a way that any rug enthusiast, whether a novice or an expert, can expand their knowledge of textiles. The photos are amazing, and the layout of the different areas of focus truly make this an easy-to-use, and fun-to-use, reference book. This will now be at the top of my list to those clients of mine (rug cleaners and rug owners) as a book they must own, and I absolutely love that there is a Kindle version (finally!) of a great rug book. I truly appreciate Mr. Stone's contributions to our industry, and especially this newest contribution.

A Philosophy of Music Education: Advancing the Vision (3rd Edition), by Bennett Reimer

This book advances the philosophy of its previous editions into new territory, recasting it in light of emerging ideas and interests in philosophy in general and in philosophy of music in particular. The foundational concept of this book—that the values of music are gained through direct experiences with its meaningful sounds—remains intact, but is explained and applied in broader, more inclusive scope, with a synergistic philosophical stance as the basis. In addition it clarifies and updates for readers the explanations of musical feeling, musical creativity, and musical meaning that are at its core. For music educators, music lovers, or anyone who wants a synergistic philosophy of music education inclusive of a variety of positions.

Review

"The author is one of the few people who actually has something unique and important to say about the present state of music education in the world." — Dr. John Kratus, Michigan State University

"This is a broad, sweeping text. While the core issues and perspectives of the previous editions have been maintained, here they are framed and explored in light of contemporary perspectives, theories, research findings, and curricular developments. This book examines the unique value of music and music learning, explains why school music education has been such a successful enterprise in the past, and proposes future directions for continued growth." — Dr. Steven Morrison, University o f Washington

"Reimer is perhaps the most progressive thinker in music education because he is so knowledgeable and compassionate about current trends in philosophy, education, and psychology." — Dr. Carlos Xavier Rodriguez, University of Iowa

"This 'revisioning' of his philosophy stakes some new ground as it adroitly and cogently addresses the tough questions faced by twenty-first century music educators. This volume is required reading for everyone concerned with the theory and practice of American music education." — Dr. James F. Daugherty, University of Kansas

From the Publisher
This classic volume presents a unified philosophy of music -- the role of feeling, creating art, meaning in art, and experiencing art and music.

From the Back Cover

The first (1970) and second (1989) editions of this book played a significant role in establishing the philosophy of aesthetic education as a widely accepted basis for the field of music education in the United States and around the world. Few if any alternative philosophies were offered during those times, allowing the field to establish a strong, common bond of values and aspirations, powerfully fueled by the widespread adoption of this book.

In the 1990s and to the present, professional philosophical work in music education grew dramatically, leading to a higher degree of sophistication and the emergence of more varied alternatives than ever before in its history. Confusion about basic values began to be felt, with concomitant loss of security and of a broadly shared vision. Fragmentation and disunity became a real possibility.

This edition offers a synergistic solution to problems of professional philosophical uncertainty. It argues that what seem to be alternative value positions are better viewed as varied approaches to goals most music educators share, goals now encompassing a wider diversity of values than had previously been recognized.

A key addition is the author's new theory of intelligence, based on roles rather than frames of mind. By demonstrating how each of various musical roles constitutes a particular manifestation of intelligence, he liberates the concept of intelligence from its traditional and continuing narrowness. The challenging implications of the philosophy are spelled out both as the conclusion of each chapter and as the culminating chapters of the book.

A Great Read For All Music Educators
By Music4life69@hotmail.com
This text presents an excellent philosophy of music education! It makes clear that the nature and value of music must be found WITHIN it, not outside. We music educators must express to the public that music in itself is good and should not be an excuse or tool for increased standardized test scores, etc. Currently, more and more music educators are forced to link musical attributes to scholastic activity. This deteriorates the nature and value of music. Author Reimer makes it clear that an aesthetic view of music education is a goal for all music educators to strive for.

To the neophyte philosophers on Amazon
By skeeterville
I'm tired of hearing from the neophyte philosophy Nazis on this website about how Reimer is out-of-step with contemporary philosophy. The man and his work defined a generation of music educators. Period. He put the issues on the table, and he gave folks like Elliott and Jorgensen something to respond to when there was no comparable scholarship in music education. Like it or not, his book provides a reason why music is indispensable in the education of children, something that other philosophers have not done.

The negative reviewers on here treat philosophy like fundamentalist religion: MY god is better than YOUR god. Here's a hint for those folks: there is no TRUE philosophy of music or music education. In the marketplace of ideas, the "winners" are those who stimulate the most conversation. And Reimer has done more than his share of that.

I find the third edition less valuable than the second, because Reimer, I think, is trying too hard in the third edition to placate his detractors. Having said that, though, this book is one that every music teacher should read, digest, and debate. Music education is facing perilous times, and Reimer has something in this book to say about all that. Don't let the negative reviews dissuade you from a valuable reading experience.

Good ideas, but missing pages
By rlacey
I thing Reimer's ideas are sound. However, I'm afraid that this printing has problems. The print quality is not outstanding considering the price. A few pages are missing the ends of words and it's missing pages 82 and 83 (and mine is not the only one--several others in my class were also shorted). Too bad for such an expensive book.

Lee Marvin: Point Blank, by Dwayne Epstein

The first full-length, authoritative, and detailed story of the iconic actor's life to go beyond the Hollywood scandal-sheet reporting of earlier books, this account offers an appreciation for the man and his acting career and the classic films he starred in, painting a portrait of an individual who took great risks in his acting and career. Although Lee Marvin is best known for his icy tough guy roles—such as his chilling titular villain in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or the paternal yet brutally realistic platoon leader in The Big Red One—very little is known of his personal life; his family background; his experiences in WWII; his relationship with his father, family, friends, wives; and his ongoing battles with alcoholism, rage, and depression, occasioned by his postwar PTSD. Now, after years of researching and compiling interviews with family members, friends, and colleagues; rare photographs; and illustrative material, Hollywood writer Dwayne Epstein provides a full understanding and appreciation of this acting titan’s place in the Hollywood pantheon in spite of his very real and human struggles.

From Booklist
When a five-year-old boy’s Christmas list includes a cannon and a battleship, it’s not a big surprise that he winds up being a tough guy. Marvin was a tough guy in life—he fought in WWII—and on the big screen (although his first wife said he was “a bowl of mashed potatoes” in private). Epstein’s biography of the star of Cat Ballou, The Dirty Dozen, and Point Blank (whence the book’s title) tracks the actor’s life from his early years to his death in 1987. It’s a good Hollywood bio, focusing on its subject’s public and private lives without descending into the sort of gossip and rumor that typify many celebrity life stories. Almost all the interviews for the book date from the middle to late 1990s, suggesting that the majority of the preliminary work was done quite a while ago. A lengthier appraisal of Marvin’s film legacy might have made the book feel more current, but that’s a minor quibble. This is the kind of biography Lee Marvin deserves, even if it feels like it sat on a shelf for a long time. --David Pitt

A good book on an important actor
By Claude Lambert
Dwayne EPSTEIN uses the same technique as Cornelius Ryan (A bridge too far, The longest day): take as many interviews as you can and weave them into a story. It is well done, very honest and it certainly involved a lot of research and work.
Lee Marvin is unjustly forgotten, probably because he played so many cowboys and criminals in B movies. He was an intelligent man and a very modern actor at the rise of method acting; he was born the same year as Marlon Brando. He had that rare gift: if he had only one sentence to say, he would make of it the center piece of the film. He also was a dark man with the dark hero appeal of many movies after WW2 and the Vietnam War. His fame years range from Cat Ballou and the beautiful but difficult movie Ship Of Fools [HD] (with all the best actors of the day) in 1965 to Gorky Park in 1983.
The book makes little concession to the hero. It seems that every time Lee Marvin was drunk, somebody remembers it, and it is the book. A real hero of World War 2, Marvin suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, which was mostly ignored and untreated at the time.
This leaves us pondering some miserable moments, such as this. Marvin asks for a divorce, telling his wife: "This is nothing personal, but I don't want to be married anymore". His wife rightfully answered "I wish you would have told me this four children ago."

The one and only...............
By Mrs C Atkinson
My mum was a Lee Marvin fan and I followed suit, I have read Pamela Marvin's and Betty Marvin's biographies, along with Donald Zec, and Robert Lentz account of his films and career, I watched Hollywood s Straight shooter video and John Boorman's video account of Lee's life but it's Dwayne Epstien who brings the real Lee to life. Point Blank took Dwayne 20 years to write and it shows the pains he has taken to get it right. The front cover draws you to look inside and explore more on one of the greatest bad men of the movies, Christopher Marvin, Lee's son also gives his blessing to the book as he fondly remembers the man who was a movie star but also a very affectionate father, he explains about the precious times he had with his dad and how they spent time together and activities they enjoyed together, after reading the book it brought back many fond memories of his dad. I love the book and enjoy the way Dwayne has used quotes from Lee himself, e.g. Chapter six Lee describes himself as a trouble shooter, and in roles no one else knew what to do with. The pictures in the book give you a feel of how Lee grew up, showing clearly how proud he was to have been a US Marine, and how he developed his career, showing the many faces of Lee bringing even more life to the book. This book also shows the dedication of admirers and fans as it talks of the Bastard son of Lee Marvin, keeping the legend alive. Dwayne explains all the important dates from the birth of Lee's mum in 1896 to Lee's death in 1987 a true history from start to finish, listing films he could have made in fact this book is not just a biography it's an encyclopaedia on Lee Marvin. You don't have to be a fan to read this book, film buffs need to give it a read, if you enjoy a good biography give it a go, I have already soaked up every page and I intend to do it again very soon, once I started I couldn't put it down, start to finish in eighteen hours I just had to carry on. Thank you Dwayne Epstein for bringing LEE MARVIN back to life, as far as I'm concerned this book is the one and only Lee Marvin story............

A must read for any Lee Marvin fan
By FreyGirl
This book completes my biographical trifecta on Lee Marvin.

When reading a celebrity biography, the first thing I look for is whether or not the author has respect for the subject. This is usually apparent within the first five pages of any book. Most biographies fail in my opinion because they are smear jobs, for the most part. When I bought this book, I already knew of Dwayne Epstein's admiration for Lee Marvin, and so, I knew his book would most likely be balanced. I did not want to read something that would sugarcoat and make excuses for his flaws. I also did not want to read something, which focused solely on his flaws. Dwayne Epstein managed to strike a perfect balance.

As we fans know, Lee Marvin was a brilliant actor and a brave warrior. He was not only touched and scarred by his childhood with emotionally detached and clueless parents, but, also the ravages of war and alcoholism. When looking at his life, he should have had an easy life. He was an intelligent, handsome, and talented man, and yet his life was anything but easy. Dwayne Epstein does a superb job in presenting a multi-dimensional picture of this very gifted and haunted actor. It would have been very easy to only concentrate on his flaws, leaving out the good aspects of Lee's personality. Epstein confirmed what I have always suspected; that there was an acutely sensitive soul under all of that Lee Marvin bravado. I was especially pleased to read the afterword from Christopher Marvin, Lee's one and only son. I have always wanted to know his children's thoughts about their father and Christopher did not disappoint. He did not dwell in the negative, which would have been easy to do. Instead, he painted a portrait of a loving father, who bonded with his son. Thankfully, very little was said about Lee's hateful and disgusting second wife and when Epstein talked about family, the focus was where it should have been: on his first wife Betty and their children. In addition to Mr. Epstein's wonderful book, I would recommend the book written by Betty Marvin and the book written by Donald Zec (Lee authorized the Zec book and Zec interviewed him, spending countless hours with Lee). All three of these books together are all you will ever need when reading about this screen icon. Dwayne Epstein's admiration for Lee comes through, and he perfectly demonstrates to lesser biographers how to write about an imperfect subject without completely trashing them.

Native Tongue (Native Tongue Trilogy), by Suzette Haden Elgin

Called "fascinating" by the New York Times upon its first publication in 1984, Native Tongue won wide critical praise and cult status, and has often been compared to the futurist fiction of Margaret Atwood. Set in the twenty-second century, the novel tells of a world where women are once again property, denied civil rights and banned from public life. Earth's wealth depends on interplanetary commerce with alien races, and linguists --a small, clannish group of families --have become the ruling elite by controlling all interplanetary communication. Their women are used to breed perfect translators for all the galaxies' languages.

Nazareth Chornyak, the most talented linguist of the family, is exhausted by her constant work translating for trade organizations, supervising the children's language education, running the compound, and caring for the elderly men. She longs to retire to the Barren House, where women past childbearing age knit, chat, and wait to die. What Nazareth comes to discover is that a slow revolution is going on in the Barren Houses: there, word by word, women are creating a language of their own to free them from men's control.

"Native Tongue brings to life not only the possibility of a women's language, but a rationale for one,"-Village Voice

"Elgin takes up more than linguistics, of course-everything from religion to sexthe story is absolutely compelling."-Women's Review of Books

Suzette Haden Elgin is author of twelve science fiction novels and is widely know for her best-selling series The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense and for The Grandmother Principles. She is director of the Ozark Center for Language Studies and is professor emerita of linguistics at San Diego State University.

Susan Squier is Julia Brill professor of English and Women's Studies at Pennsylvania State University.

Review
"Suzette Haden Elgin's Native Tongue trilogy, a classic text of angry feminism, is also an exemplary experiment in speculative fiction, deftly and implacably pursuing both a scientific hypothesis and an ideological hypothesis through all their social, moral, and emotional implications." —Ursula K. Le Guin, author of The Left Hand of Darkness

"Less well known than the The Handmaid's Tale but just as apocalyptic in [its] vision . . . Suzette Haden Elgin's Native Tongue. . . records female tribulation in a world where . . . women have no public rights at all. Elgin's heroines do, however, have one set of weapons—words of their own." —Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar, The New York Times Book Review

"Native Tongue brings to life not only the possibility of a women's language, but also the rationale for one. . . . [It is] a language that can bring to life concepts men have never needed, have never dreamed of—and thus change the world. Elgin never makes the mistake of easy utopiansim or over-optimism. Her women revel in patience." —Voice Literary Supplement

"As a nonreader of science fiction . . . I urge Native Tongue upon you. . . . Like Margaret Atwood in The Handmaid's Tale but more drastically and distinctly, Elgin has carried current fundamentalist views on women to their 'logical' conclusion. . . . Above all she understands that until women find the words and syntax for what they need to say, they will never say it, nor will the world hear it. . . . There isn't a phony or romantic moment here, and the story is absolutely compelling." —Women's Review of Books

"Elgin's novel will inspire those who believe that women's words can change the world. Read it!"
—Marleen S. Barr, author of Lost in Space: Probing Feminist Science Fiction and Beyond

Gripping, amazing, thought-provoking, must read book.
By A. A. Baldwin
Seriously gripping, amazingly inventive, torturingly upsetting, and so much that is true and must be considered in our every day lives, folded into a fantastic science fiction novel.

I mistakenly thought as I was reading, that this was modeled after Atwood's brilliant "The Handmaid's Tale." No, that was published after "Native Tongue." But if you are familiar with Atwood's work, this awesome novel by Elgin can roughly and inadequately be described as something reminiscent of The Handmaid's Tale but with more depth, a few aliens, and lots of linguists.

The themes of human nature, human cruelty, human blindness to motivations, and the dangers and joys of language and words choice are astounding. The feminist themes buried in a book in which the female characters have few legal rights are both subtle and obvious. The book has three interwoven plot lines, any one of which could be an interesting read, but together they are so much more.

I look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy.

Is it a coincidence that the day I am reviewing this book, the Russian parliament voted to decriminalize domestic violence? This book is not about domestic violence, so don't be alarmed, but women's rights are forever under siege, clearly, so this fiction future is not an impossibility, for sure.

Feminist Classic, but just a little dated now
By Pippin Black
This story of women who create a private language as part of their resistance to a male-dominated society reads well, has good characters (mostly) and kept my attention to the end. But I got a little impatient with the hopelessly chauvinistic men, who seemed to be incredibly blind to the intelligence and abilities of the women all around them.

Some of the descriptions of technology, despite the fact that the story takes place in the 22nd century, are almost delightfully antique, and reading this in 2013 reminds me of the dangers of trying to predict the future of technology. It's still worth reading, if only for the strikingly original premise.

Art Is Everywhere: How to Really Look at Things, by Lorenzo Servi

There are wonders and beauties all around us, but do we really see them?

"Art Is Everywhere" shows us how to look more carefully at our everyday world in a way that makes art easily accessible. Instead of struggling to define art, we learn to understand it as a trigger for new and different interpretations of what already surrounds us.

The artist's passion for taking photos of cities -scratches, marks, posters and other objects - led to a two-day workshop, with participants invited to explore with new eyes, and to document their findings with photographs.

This book is the result of that experience.

Each photo carries a story, revealing the unexpected in everyday life in various cities. This illustrated book acts as a kind of toolkit to enable us to decode the world around us in completely fresh ways.

Through ingenious collages and montages, this book inspires us to use art as a lens through which to view our familiar surroundings, altering our expectations of everyday objects and truly blurring the boundary between what is framed and what is not.

From the Author
Have you ever wondered why our senses become more alert when, say as tourists, we visit a city for the first time? And why it often seems that nothing extraordinary or exceptional ever happens along our daily routes?

From the Back Cover
Is it possible to discover something wonderful and special without the necessity of visiting museums, monuments, or other places that differ from our habitual haunts?

"Art is Everywhere" combines science with hands-on practices used in art workshops to illustrate how ordinary things can be seen differently and how art can, sometimes, be helpful.

This toolkit enables you to look at and decode the world around you in a completely fresh way.
