As grippingly as any novelist, preeminent World War II historian Stephen Ambrose tells the horrifying, hallucinatory saga of Easy Company, whose 147 members he calls the nonpareil combat paratroopers on earth circa 1941-45. Ambrose takes us along on Easy Company's trip from grueling basic training to Utah Beach on D-day, where a dozen of them turned German cannons into dynamited ruins resembling "half-peeled bananas," on to the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of part of the Dachau concentration camp, and a large party at Hitler's "Eagle's Nest," where they drank the madman's (surprisingly inferior) champagne. Of Ambrose's main sources, three soldiers became rich civilians; at least eight became teachers; one became Albert Speer's jailer; one prosecuted Bobby Kennedy's assassin; another became a mountain recluse; the despised, sadistic C.O. who first trained Easy Company (and to whose strictness many soldiers attributed their survival of the war) wound up a suicidal loner whose own sons skipped his funeral.

Ambrose ( Pegasus Bridge ) narrates in vivid detail the adventures, misadventures, triumphs and tragedies of a single U.S. Army infantry company over its span of organizational life. Formed in July 1944 and deactivated in November 1945, E Company was one of the most successful light infantry units in the European theater. Its troops saw their first action on D-Day behind the Normandy beachhead, took part in Operation Market Garden in Holland, held the perimeter around Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and were the first to reach Hitler's Bavarian outpost at Berchtesgaden. The book is enlivened with pertinent comments by veterans of "Easy Company," who recall not only the combat action but their relations with their officers (one company commander was a petty tyrant of the worst type, but his oppressive ways had much to do with the unit's impressive esprit de corps ) and their impressions of the countries through which they campaigned (hated the French, loved the Germans). Ambrose (history, Univ. of New Orleans), who has written numerous military histories, intersperses his text with reminiscences, diary entries, and letters from the men who served in a single elite airborne company from its formation until after the war's end. The focus on one company, combined with the author's solid research and excellent prose, produces a book that vividly evokes both the excitement of battle and the hours of boredom away from combat. Like Harold P. Leinbaugh and John D. Campbell's The Men of Company K: The Autobiography of a World War II Rifle Company ( LJ 12/85), this book accurately describes the lives of the men who bore the brunt of war. If a library could make only one purchase covering the American soldier in combat during World War II in Europe, this would be the book. Highly recommended for all libraries. Indispensible companion to the miniseries.

Notwithstanding the wonderful HBO miniseries based on this book, "Band of Brothers" is an entertaining and worthwhile read in its own right. Ambrose skilly fully weaves personal accounts from the paratroopers of E Company into a compelling story of the war in the European theater. Ambrose has earned his stripes as one of the premier historians of World War II, and with good reason. His writing style is easy to read, he does a great job of individualizing the large cast of characters and he masterfully sets his story within the context of the greater conflict without distracting the reader.
All this makes the book essential reading for those watching the HBO miniseries. The miniseries is great cinema, but the medium is necessarily limited in how much background it can bring to each episode. After the first few episodes I started reading the book along with the show, and it helped me in distinguish the characters and orient what was happening. Also, the book gives you a greater understanding of why certain objectives were so critical to the war effort. When I've read the part of the book that corresponds to a new episode, I get to focus on the performances and visual aspects of the show. Reading the book only enhances the experience of watching the miniseries.

A vivid, personal picture of warfare

Band of Brothers, by Stephen Ambrose, is the story of E (Easy) Company of the 101st Airborne Division in World War II. It's a very personal account, as Ambrose conducted numerous interviews with the surviving members of the company and uses those interviews to imbue a sense of closeness to the action and the men who went into that action. It's a very effective book, though it does seem to be "history lite." I'm not really sure why, because Ambrose has obviously done a lot of research in producing this story. Perhaps it is because it's not a typical history book with documentation from all over the place. Instead, he seems to have used only a couple of sources besides the men of Easy themselves. Then again, is that a bad thing? Personally, I don't think so, at least not in this case. Ambrose is not attempting to write a history of World War II. He's writing the story of a group of men who formed relationships and bonds that would carry them through the rest of their lives.
I found this book fascinating. Most of the history books I have read have been very abstract, telling about the moving of units and what they did and how successful they were in battle. They always have some personal angles involved, either talking about letters written home, or some personal stories of valor. Ultimately, though, they are about the battles themselves. These books can be very interesting.
Band of Brothers tells us everything about a group of men and how they fought. We get to laugh with them, we get to see the horrors that they have seen. We also get to see the incompetence that sometimes becomes prevalent in wartime. Ambrose doesn't pull any punches, and neither do the men of Easy to whom he spoke. They are very outspoken about the people they didn't like. Not just people, but also nationalities. One thing to keep in mind when reading this book is that the only impression of nationalities that these men had were when they were going through territory, wondering whether or not they would be running into enemy fire at any time. Some people of these nationalities may take offense at some of the statements in this book. One fault with it is that Ambrose doesn't really make clear whether or not these feelings are just the feelings of the men at the time, or if these feelings have stayed with the men ever since.
The descriptions of the action are just incredible. Never before have I seen war from this perspective. While I have seen graphic descriptions of combat before, this story takes the reader to a much deeper level. We get to see the fear and the determination of these soldiers, the comradeship that forms among them. We get to see individual episodes of action in each battle, we see friends die, we see true heroism, and how situations can get messed up in an instant. We also get to see the foibles of the men, how some of them got drunk at every opportunity, how they dealt with war and what it did to them. It truly is remarkable.
One other thing that is missing in this book, to an extent, is a sense of context to these events. Ambrose does provide this occasionally, especially when talking about Market Garden and the plight of the British paratroopers in the city of Arnhem, but he's not always successful in doing this. I wasn't expecting long passages about what was going on elsewhere, but there are times in this book where the action seems very isolated from the war around the men. It's a very narrow view, and while it is understandable since this isn't a history of the war, it does make the actions of Easy seem a little removed.
There are few maps in the book, but they do the job. They are at the front of the book, and they consist of a map of northern France and England, a close-up map of Utah Beach (the beach behind which Easy dropped on D-Day), a close up view of Market Garden, and close-up view of Bastogne. They do the job, letting you follow a bit of the action. I don't know if it would have been possible, but it would have been nice to see some maps of the cities involved in the battles, so we could get a sense of what the men of Easy were doing in each battle. But again, that may not have been possible, so I won't hold it against Ambrose.
I really liked the chapter talking about the men after the war. I felt it really solidified the relationship that the reader has with these men. You have spent the rest of the book getting to know these men and seeing the horrors of war with them, and now you get to find out "the rest of the story." It adds the perfect climax to the book, and reinforces the feeling that this is a personal history of a group of men and not a history of warfare. Some of the fates are tragic, but most of them just got on with their lives. It was nice to see.
Ultimately, this is a very valuable book for anybody who likes reading about warfare. It adds a very personal touch to the whole thing. There aren't long descriptions of blood and guts, but you do see just enough to feel the tension along with these men. I feel like I know these men, and I'm proud to know them. They put their lives on the line for freedom, and they did it willingly and without question. They didn't like it, but they did it anyway. Seeing their story told in such a manner was a wonderful experience. So what if it's history lite? It's a valuable story and it's wonderfully told. That's all that matters.

A Personal History

As you would expect from the title, this book is focused on the stories of the individuals who made up this "band of brothers". Stephen Ambrose based his account on personal interviews and diaries and letters written at the time, occasionally moving back to a larger view when he quotes from an official history or other text.
This is the story of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101 Airborne Division. A famous group in a famous unit, fighting from Normandy in the early hours of D-Day, through Holland in the spectacular failure of Operation Market-Garden and Belgium in a gallant stand at Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge, all the way to Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" in the Austrian mountains, where the victors had a well-deserved feast of wine, women and song.
This is an incredible story, told mainly in the words of those who were there, and you can feel the fear, exhilaration, killing fury, bitter cold and biting hunger along the way. But ost of all you can feel the camaraderie of soldiers thrown together in a remote training camp in 1942, who trained and fought as a band of brothers and now, sixty years on, still maintain their closest friendships with each other.
In another sense it is a story of an amazing soldier - Second Lieutenant Winters, one of the founding officers of Easy Company, who ended up a Major commanding the battalion. He led his troops with coolness and courage, intelligence and humanity. He gained more than respect, he gained the love of these warriors, and he earnt it through common sense decisions in training and in combat. His decisions saved the lives of his men and cost the enemy dearly, and his small unit actions are still cited as textbook examples.
This book is chockablock full of infantry minor actions. Advance, assault, defence, withdrawal, patrolling and raiding - all told from multiple viewpoints in stark detail - the war in microcosm as seen by airborne infantrymen.
There are maps and pictures, an index and an epilogue describing the postwar careers of the men of Easy. This book stands alone as totally engrossing war story, but is also an essential companion to the magnificent HBO miniseries.
As a brutally, touchingly honest story of men at war, I cannot recommend this book too highly. It is an instant classic.

New Christmas Story!

Vickie has written a cute, stand-alone, Christmas story using the characters from her series.

Two children,Amy and James and their cat, Kiwi; must help a star rescue a fairy from a witch and help them return to Santa before Christmas!

Their adventure flows easily and will keep all children enthralled!

I love how she shares moral values so smoothly. Reminds all the true reason for this most precious season.

I enjoyed the descriptions of Cat City and Santa's Grotto.

Such a wonderfully vivid imagination!

Kiwi continues his adventures with Amy and James

This latest installment to the Kiwi Series is a Christmas story in which Kiwi, Amy, and James help a star rescue his fairy friend from the clutches of an evil witch who is holding her captive in a haunted house. Their adventures take them back to Cat City to enlist the help of old friends such as Siam and Inspector Furrball. In an enchanting twist, they wind up meeting Father Christmas and traveling with him around the world and eventually to his magical realm of Snowfell.

Kiwi's Christmas Tail is a delightful book filled with magical adventures and great teachable moments to entertain and delight your children. Great reading for the entire family. Again, the Kiwi series of adventures delivers magic and love. Very enjoyable.

Love the Christmas Story

KIWI'S CHRISTMAS TAIL by Vickie Johnstone

Kiwi books are inspired by a fluffy black cat that Vicki Johnstone once owned and now is on the other side. The Christmas tail is about a Christmas Fairy that was stolen by a green witch with her toad and a Star that was hiding in a store till Amy and James' mother bought it and brought him home. The star and fairy need to get back to Father Christmas before Christmas Eve or it will take another year before they get another chance to get home. Read the book and go on an adventure like you wouldn't believe.

You will have to read this lively story about how Kiwi and the children aid the Christmas Fairy and Star home. Magic is involved but check out what the children will be offered when they get to Father Christmas' home. This a really fun, exciting, unexpected adventure that could only be written with Kiwi as the main character. The Kiwi series is one of my favorite series of children's books.

A bitingly funny satire

"Accidental Death of an Anarchist," by Dario Fo, is adapted by Gavin Richards from a translation by Gillian Hanna. The Methuen Modern Plays edition contains an introduction by Stuart Hood; Fo himself contributes an author's note and a postscript. The opening pages note that the original Italian edition had a copyright date of 1970. The author's note describes how the play was inspired by the death of an anarchist being held in police custody.
This outrageous comedy opens with a character known as the "Maniac" being brought to a police station. It's a very "metatheatrical" piece; Fo warps theatrical conventions and makes jokes in a way that reminds me a bit of Luigi Pirandello's "Six Characters in Search of an Author." There are some really funny scenes, but a very serious vein still runs throughout the piece.
Ultimately, this is a thought-provoking piece about truth. What is the true story, and how do you discover it? Fo's satiric wit explores police brutality as well as the relationships among the police, the media, and the political establishment. I recommend this piece by the Nobel Prize winning Fo to all with an interest in 20th century drama and/or political activism.

A Play Not Performed ENOUGH

I truly enjoyed this play and again am wondering why it is not put on more often. Granted, it has a specific political objective, due to its timely plot and circumstancial event. Yet, as a performer, I find the quality of writing to be extremely wonderful. Interestingly, I also discovered that Fo's viewpoint on comedic and political theatre to be very similar to my own:

(It) grabs at the heart and guts, but attempts to get there by a violent moment of laughter. Because laughter does not remain at the bottom of the mind, leaving sediment which cannot be wiped off. Because laughter helps avoid one of the worst dangers, which is catharsis. (5)

Fo wanted the reverse of catharsis, the emotional release, and it is very apparent in Accidental Death of an Anarchist. He seeks to provoke, debate, to arouse feelings and to challenge ideas while inviting his audience to consider new points of view. I respect this form of theatre, for it is the hardest to write, collaborate, and present clearly to an already cynical audience in this day and age. By using an absurdist/satirical/farcial approach towards the issues of power, its abuse, and political stations, he creates sense out of nonsensical characters and situations. The maniac, a harliquien like character, leads the members of a police station somewhere in a city, in this case we assume New York or London, through a dizzying investigation around the questionable death of an anarchist from years before. Mysteriously, the anarchist had "thrown" himself from a four story window during the course of police investigation. We, the audience suspect foul play for the cause, and in effect we see the maniac give nothing but insane play to the accused. He is quick witted and incredibly dynamic with language and vast information. The maniac flaunts with their pride and guilt, causing mass confusion. The audience cannot help but love his crazy ways. In true satiric fasion, just and darkly comedic rewards are served to all characters by the end. The audience is left wondering how these events effect them. The ever present window in the scene is the only realistic element that the audience must contend with. It reminds them of the reality of the crime, how it really took place, and yet they are forced to laugh at it and find disgust in that humor. It is this form of satire that provokes thoughts and action towards change, which is what Fo wanted. It is this subtle stealthiness of dark humor that creates the desired effect of political theatre: change, perhaps for the better, or in this case, for the playwrights cause.

Way Too Much Zen

I saw a small production of this play a few years ago in downtown Minneapolis and was most interested in what it had to say about police interrogation techniques. This is not a topic which I would expect to be popular now, as most emphasis has been shifted to deadly confrontations, and the only major death in this play is of a suspect who was hanging out of a police department window before he dropped to his death. In the history of people being pick up for interrogation, this might be as famous someplace in Italy as the Biko case in South Africa, where police in Port Elizabeth picked Biko up and slammed him against the wall because he was not cooperating fully in their investigation of his attitude toward law and order.
I thought that the theme of the play was that the police get overly zealous in trying to pin a crime on a particular person once the police have made up their collective minds who they think should have committed the crime, as the defense allegations in the famous O.J. murder case seemed well founded when the methods of the L.A.P.D. were subject to the scrutiny of attorneys who are aware of how these things are usually done. In the case of the actual event upon which the Accidental Death of the Anarchist was based, the police techniques were subject to an official investigation, and the play was written as on ongoing farce which kept Italy informed as more facts came to light. The play may be way beyond the Zen of any audience, but if people think that something about the nature of the police is revealed in it, I don't think that those people should be considered as paranoid as they ought to be. Anyone who loses sleep over this kind of thing hasn't adjusted well to modern society, so they can probably find a shrink to give them pills that will put them to sleep, but that is a different topic, but not much different, really.

Why did I Write this Book?

In the age of new media, some authors have almost forgotten that media is primarily a marketing discipline. Other books barely mention media buying which is at least half the importance of the function. None give a paragraph to IMC or integration. So here's why I decided to write my own book!

Media is a creative, strategic marketing discipline, and should be presented that way.We are in an exciting period with change all around us. We are in the midst of a 21st century revolution, but no authors seem to have noted that fact, other than the digital revolution.

Current books are not comprehensive, e.g., barely mentioning the discipline of MEDIA BUYING which is at least half of the importance of the media function and and have somehow lost their marketing focus.

Awesome media textbook

Very thorough textbook on media planning and buying. Professors should enjoy this book because it provides enough information for them to structure their course in a variety of different ways, or even use it for multiple courses. There is also a workbook available for this book as well so professors can easily assign homework assignments that are made to accompany the readings in this book.

I liked this book because it is up to date and includes examples and information using some of today's most popular companies. All of the information in this book is designed to educate students about the future of media, and it covers what is happening with media now such as the decline of newspapers and the rise of devices that allow you to skip commercials. There is a "target audience" section which covers how to best reach your target audience based on which generation they are from and provides information on the Baby Boomer generation, Generation X, Generation Y, and the newest group generation Z which will become even more of a target audience for many college students now by the time they graduate.

Students will find that this textbook is easier to read than many other textbooks and includes several helpful graphs and charts. There is a section on job opportunities which is very helpful for any students that are seriously interested in pursuing a career in media. Each chapter in the book is divided up into several smaller subsections which makes the book easier to read and understand. There is also a chapter summary at the end of each chapter which provides a short break down of the main points covered in the chapter which is perfect for reviewing before a test or quiz.

Informative and comprehensive

I teach many advertising and marketing related courses at my local college, it seems now that the biggest and most important topic I need to teach to my students are the newer forms and techniques related to media buying and how to efficiently plan a campaign. I have been searching for some quality books and information to read with the class and up until I came across this book I really wasn't having much luck finding anything sufficient enough for their high standard of learning. After reading just a few chapters of this book I knew that this was exactly what I have been looking for, the material will be perfect for the class due to it being very informative and detailed, but also written in a way that is easy to understand and learn from. Perfect for my students.

This is definitely going to be the book of the year in regards to what my class is going to emphasis in their studies, I read through the book myself to make some notes and prioritize what I was going to teach first and I literally didn't see any out of date or useless information, I am quite impressed because usually I have to trim unneeded parts and it can become quite tedious. The book is definitely the most comprehensive and educational media planning book that I have ever came across. I am looking forward to finishing the book with the class.

Comprehensive and Relevant

As a 25+ year media professional and an adjunct professor teaching Strategic Media Planning, I was thrilled to find a text and workbook that looks at media as it stands currently and discusses it in a real world way. I have adopted this text, workbook and thumbnail planner for my classes and look forward to engaging the students with this information. It's been difficult to find a text that talks about digital and alternative media and also careers in the media field. This text covers everything and then more, while making even the dreaded Media Math interesting and interactive.

For students considering a career in advertising or media, this is a text and workbook that should definitely be put on the shelf for future reference.

Jeff Chang has been a hip-hop journalist for more than a decade and has written for The San Francisco Chronicle, The Village Voice, Vibe, The Nation, URB, Rap Pages, Spin, and Mother Jones. For the Hip-Hop Enthusiast

For someone who is really interested in hip-hop and its history and development, I think this book would be very appreciated. However, for the casual reader, it may not be the best choice, the reason being that the author talks about a great number of artists and songs that mean little to someone who is not already well-versed on some of those more significant names and albums. Still, it does offer an interesting perspective on hip-hop and the historical events that influenced and played key roles in how it became what it is today.

Apparently a "History of the Hip-Hop Generation" is not the same as a history of hip-hop

There are some interesting nuggets about hip-hop history in this book, but you must sift through literally hundreds of pages of extraneous information. It is a difficult read; if you are able to get through it without looking up any words then congratulations, but it takes a lot of reading to get into pockets of good information about actual hip-hop. Most of the book is about the social aspects of hip-hop as opposed to, say, how Death Row was formed, or how Run-DMC met, or anything along those lines. It is a great crash course in post-civil rights era black America, but if you're purely interested in hip-hop history than it can be a pretty brutal read at times.
