About the Author
Marjane Satrapi was born in Rasht, Iran. She now lives in Paris, where she is a regular contributor to magazines and newspapers throughout the world, including The New Yorker, and The New York Times. She is the author of Embroideries, Chicken with Plums, and several children's books. She cowrote and codirected the animated feature film version of Persepolis.

A great coming of age story of a girl building her own identity and finding out what it means to be true to yourself in times of political turmoil and religious extremism in Iran.

I particularly enjoyed how Satrapi depicted the emotional chaos brought by her time spent in Vienna and the challenges of feeling foreign everywhere, both at "home" and abroad.

My favorite part was when she muses about all the rules Iranians had to follow for the government to leave them alone and how worrying about being arrested for breaking the rules kept them from worrying about the things that truly matter: civil rights, human rights, freedom of speech. It is applicable to so many other countries, not just those with repressive regimes but those facing extreme violence, those were the media fills up the space with inane content.

It is a great book, easy to follow, even for someone with very little background on Iran and its rich history, a story that begs us to ask more questions and educate ourselves.

Really fantastic. Couldn't put it down. If you like personal stories or have any interest in Iran and/or even the complexity of what's going on now in the Middle East, I highly recommend. It won't explain all the history, etc. to you per se, but it offers an inside account of being a child and young adult from a smart, endearing, politically aware family (and more, a family who's history is intertwined with Iranian politics) who's experiencing the effects of the Revolution throughout her childhood and young adult years. Also offers a super interesting account of young adult counterculture Vienna in the 80s. Graphics and writing are both great. Satrapi is a gifted story teller. Her parents (who are a big part of the story) must be very proud. Was sad when it ended....

AP World History Review: A Good Read

Persepolis was the most interesting biography I have read in the last few years. I loved how she made it into a comic book. It seemed to lighten or darken the mood and got you more into the book than one normally would with an autobiography. Satrapi was good about explaining her thoughts and what was going on. It helped me understand what was going on, better. Overall, I had never truly understood what exactly happened in the Iranian Revolution and the Iraq-Iran war. Because it was in her POV, I had a good outlet and experience for what actually happened. It was not the same type of information one would get from a researched history. Satrapi could write about what her neighbors said, as well as her parents. Because it is about herself, it was also more clear why people did what they did and what it was like to live in a situation like hers.
Persepolis was a good tool for a better understanding of earlier modern Iran and its conflicts. Not only does she tell you about wha twas going on in Iran, she also tells of a few parts of Europe. The racism and separation people participated in when they found out of her Iranian upbringing. People saw Iranians as violent and cruel as well as oppressive of women. She tried to get them to understand that not all were like that, and still, the stereotypes were not completely true in the first place. Satrapi does a great job at portraiting real life struggles and how she got through them. It gives students a new perspective on how other people live and what a revolution and war can feel like at the front. Students here do not really experience this type of thing. Understanding the circumstances and what people lived through can help a student understand why different choices were or were not made. Therefore understanding a people and time period more.

This book was made for winning

This is the first poker book that I have read all the way through. As much as I love poker, historically, I have not enjoyed reading about it. Most books about poker have these extended scenarios where the author gives a hypothetical example of the cards you have and the cards on the board and every possible version of what every other player might have. I find these stories incredibly boring and not helpful. They remind me of someone retelling a bad beat story at one table about something that happened at another table on another day at another casino. You had to be there for it to be interesting. Thankfully, this is not that type of book. Dr. Schoonmaker takes a different approach and writes about the way the game is played. He challenges the reader to take a hard look at themselves and their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to how they play poker. Even though I have been playing small limit games in Las Vegas as a tourist for over 10 years, I still found this book to be really helpful. I consider myself an action learner and most of what I know now about poker is what I've learned the hard way. It is only this year, though, that I have really focused on seat position as a strategy, thanks to Dr. Schoonmaker's advice. It has made a world of difference. I wish I would have read this book 10 years ago, I might have saved myself a lot of money. If you like to play small limit games, I think you would benefit from reading this book. It should pay for itself easily, the next time you play.

Due to the rise of no limit, most of the current action in limit poker is focused on small stakes holdem ($4-$8 and below) while the higher levels of limit holdem have almost died out. However, many of us still prefer limit poker and small stakes limit poker is very popular especially among those who are new to poker or just play for fun.

With the publication of this book, Dr. Al Schoonmaker has written one of the most important works ever on beating these small games. While there have been many books written about small games, they are all deeply flawed because they fail to address the impact of the rake, the jackpot drop, and other associated costs. Further, they make certain assumptions about how players react to bets and raises which turn out to be wrong. Finally, special rewards like high hand bonuses and other promotions that are funded by the jackpot drop can have a significant impact on how certain hands get played, which have never been addressed in previous books.

Al’s book does not present a formulaic approach to beating these games because there is no “formula.” He will not tell you what hands to play in what positions, when to bet or raise, and so forth. All this approach does is keep a novice from becoming a big loser. To become a winner, you need to understand things like pot-sizing, player types, seat selection, and a host of other factors beyond just starting hand values.

In closing, I know from having spent many hours playing with Al that he is among the most successful of all the small stakes players I have met. His book is a must read.

Terrific! A Must Read For The Typical Player!

“How to Beat Small Poker Games” is a terrific poker book!

Alan Schoonmaker, Ph.D. confronts the big questions: Can the recreational player overcome the overhead, rake, and promotion costs of a modern low-limit game in a card room? If that is possible, can a typical player lighten the weight of the obstacles which he carries with him through the door?

Following Alan's advice requires work and discipline. He explains why those are necessary. (Thank goodness, virtually no poker mathematics in this book.) Alan is aware that certain folks are happy where they are. Or are they?

He clearly states that achieving better results might not bring certain players more fun at the tables. As for me? I feel better when I do better. I am happy to apply his principles. Anything worth doing, is worth improving.

Alan Schoonmaker has extended his knowledge, rather like a handshake, to all the plumbers, waitresses, doctors, secretaries, young adults and seniors who sit, side by side, around the tables in card rooms spread across the land. We love the game. We want to book a few more wins at the cages -- just want to deal with the increasing high costs.

This book, to my knowledge, sets forth the cold, hard facts – present day realities, which I have never seen discussed in a book.

Most of us play cards to compete with others in an exciting game. Still, we want this to occur for a profit or reasonable price. At the same time, humans are “social beings.” I once asked Wasshim, our floorman, “What happens to the people who lose? Will the game dry up?”

Wass smiled, “Oh, they're still here. Some take a pauses to get another buy-in.” (This book will help keep the game going, despite higher costs. And all of us want to take fewer “pauses.”)

No, Dr. Schoonmaker is not my father! (I have never met or spoken with him.) He is known by his Good Works. You can wrestle the low limits to victory, if you follow his instructions.

Best used as a reference, not learning tool

Peter Jones is an SAP superstar, but this book, unfortuantely, is a disappointment as a means of learning SAP BPC 10.0. Sridhar Srinivasan's SAP Business Planning and Consolidation 3rd edition for BPC 10.0 is much better suited for that purpose.

You don't learn to play the piano by staring at sheet music. Once you touch the keys you can connect the sound with the notes written. Similarly, you learn SAP BPC by doing and only Sridhar's book develops a single case study from beginning to end to allow you to master the basics before proceeding to more advanced topics.

Once you see how BPC works following step by step in Sridhar's book, then Peter's book will make more sense. Tim Soper was Peter's collaborator, and with a background in training delivery, let users down by not enforcing the proper sequencing of ideas/topics.

Example: Showing drill down of customer hierarchy on page 165, but not showing the loading of customer master data until page 329.

Example: Annoying, consistent habit of displaying blank entry forms. On page 91, how much effort is it to type in the values of ID, Description for the account type selected.

Peter's explanation of currency conversion appears complete, but if you step back a minute, you can't help but appreciate how much more work doing translations is in BPC than in native ECC where they are done largely automatically behind the scenes. New tools = more work, there is something wrong with the equation. Why hasn't SAP lifted the code of currency translation from ECC and dumped it into BPC, for all but the must unusual situations?

The biggest hole in this "advanced" book is the short shrift it gives to BPC planning models, not even 10 pages. Anyone with exposure to SAP Course SEM215 Integrated Financial Planning with BPS may note that building models was previously a five day course.

Finally, very little attention is given to clarifying differences between BI and BPC functionality and the retraction of BPC results back into R/3. For example, when is BI-Trade Promotion Management using for planning purposes as opposed to BPC-Trade Promotion management. How is sales and operations planning done, if at all in BPC? Why BPC models that require you to write forumulas to calculate depreciation when the formulas are all in ECC and depreciation can easily be posted to cost center plans both for existing assets and future assets planned on investment orders. In short, the sleekness and simplicity that once was the hallmark of SAP planning is now diffused over three products with overlapping capabilities and little attempt to explain/differentiate best practices.

These are the very topics that cry out for a book, which is not training material.

Sridhar's book, even after its 3rd edition, still has numberous omissions and typos; the transaction file for downloading available from SAP press and his screen print ignores that revenues must be loaded as credits, for starters. So maybe there's hope that an author of Peter's stature can rise to the occasion with revision or perhaps new book on how to use SAP planning tools, rather than the nitty gritty of the toolset.

I like BPC 7.5 by Sridhar and continue reading that book.
Comparing with other book, it does look like book for new person and want to pickup quickly.
In Sridhar book, diagrams are well illustrated.

When originally published in German in 1924, this volume was hailed as the first modern, comprehensive archaeological overview of an emerging area of the world. Yes, the Caribbean islands had long been known and owned, occupied, or traded among by the economically advanced nations of the world. However, the original inhabitants--as well as their artifacts, languages, and culture--had been treated by explorers and entrepreneurs alike as either slaves or hindrances to progress, and were used or eliminated. There was no publication that treated seriously the region and the peoples until this work. In the following ten years, additional pertinent publications emerged, along with a request to translate the original into Spanish. Based on those recent publications, Loven decided to update and reissue the work in English, which he thought to be the future international language of scholarship. This work is a classic, with enduring interpretations, broad geographic range, and an eager audience.

Great back-in-print

This book has been our of print forever! It is an amazing work. While not original archaeological evidence, Loven did a remarkable job of compiling all known information about Taino culture up to that time. It has been the basis for most pre-Columbian anthropological insights - though few scholars have given him credit. I am grateful to the University Alabama Press for republishing this seminal work.

Larry Winget thinks people are idiots and he can prove it. The motivational speaker's latest audiobook denounces self-destructive habits. It's hard to argue his main points. It's true that people who smoke, drink, overeat, gamble, don't exercise, overspend, and just lie around are idiots. But his presentation is far from sophisticated, he reads rather than performs, and he sounds like a trailer park version of Dr. Phil. He spends way too much time talking about how tough his advice is going to be. And he pronounces the "h" in words like "what" and "why." His advice is straightforward and na�ve: just put a "don't" in front of all the problems. It might be easier to swallow if he weren't so nasty about it. But clearly that's his schtick. Unlike other reviewers I love this title because it is so true. Simple but effective advice.

I admit it. I have always had an interest in self-help type books. I have read some of Larry Winget's other books and like his writing style. Unlike some readers of this book (People are Idiots and I can prove it), I love the title. In fact, I have often thought of writing a book with a similar title (Why are People stupid and irrational?) because of my life and job experiences.

First off, there is nothing really new about succeeding in life in this book; however, Larry presents the material in a unique and hard-hitting interesting way. There is so much information in this book that it may take more than one reading to grasp every principle. Actually this is more of a workbook because it wants you to participate in evaluating the reasons why you fail and how to succeed in the future. This book is organized into three sections. Section explains what the idiot factor is and proceeds to prove it. This section also includes the ten ways people sabotage their success and how to stop being an idiot. This section alone is worth the price of the book. The second section explains how to take action for success and action lists of success. The final section covers how easy it is to keep being an idiot and how to avoid being an idiot.

In conclusion, this is a book for anyone who is willing to face their stupidity head-on and change their lives for the better.

The Best Self Improvement Book I have Read.

Larry says things that may seem rude and cold but he does it with a reason, to get you off your but and doing things that need to be done, period. I agree with most of what he says and he does get you to think. He sees things as black and white no gray. Well some times there is something that is gray but one thing to remember is Larry talks about over all and in general. There will always be an exception to a rule. If you find him too much to take, then I feel you are not a strong person. To me he was kind of like a drill sergeant getting on you for doing something stupid, but this is about your life.

One thing people that read or listen to Larry over look is Larry admits his own faults and to me that makes him more credible. Do people really like to listen to the perfect person give advice? I know I don't because those people are usually full of it or they do not know what to do when things go wrong.

Is this book for everyone? No, I think other books offer the same advice but Larry is blunt, to the point and takes away all your reasons for at least not trying. Could he be nicer or less crude? Sure but sometimes and for me personally I like blunt and honest.A lot of what he says is things I have come up with and he puts things it there place.

Bottom line is if you need someone to get in your face a bit to get you off your but, try this book or CD set. Sure it will there are parts that will get to you but like he says that means you are thinking. You may not agree with everything he says but I feel most intelligent people will see his truth. For example, people are fat and getting fatter. Want to see why? Go watch a fast food joint at lunch time. I saw the drive through of the biggest chain in the world in my small city backed up 5 cars deep in the street and the parking lot full. Do these people not know that is garbage food and helping them stay of become fat and sick? Those are the things Larry points out and tell you to change that.

Outstanding book.

I would definitely say that you're NOT an idiot by buying this book. Rather, very smart. You are about to be entertained, maybe even get a little frustrated, and ultimately learn to think differently in some key topics and areas of life.

You want to make some changes in your life? Mr. Winget delivers no fluff, puppies, or rainbows. That's for sure. This book is straight up, in your face, right on target, and effective for making some 180 degree changes in some areas of your life, or even just making some adjustments and corrections to help you get you to where you want to go. It's almost like a handful of 'duh' thumps of reality and insight right right on your forehead as you read it, even though you already know half of the stuff, but it's all put in a cool way that hits home and is easy to understand, internalize, and grow from it.

The reading experience of this book alone was one of the best out of so many books that I've read in the past few years. Excellent book.
