About the Author

ASWATH DAMODARAN is Professor of Finance at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. In addition, Damodaran teaches training courses in corporate finance and valuation at many leading investment banks. His publications include Damodaran on Valuation: Security Analysis for Investment and Corporate Finance; Investment Valuation; Corporate Finance; Investment Management; and Applied Corporate Finance, all published by Wiley, and The Dark Side of Valuation.

Excellent book with too many typos

I have just read this book from cover to cover and benefited from it greatly. The author has a very methodical approach to valuation and demonstrates the application of principles through many examples. The closest competitor is the book Valuation by McKinsey, and with this latest revision of his text, Damodaran has I believe reclaimed the lead. It is human nature to want clear easy answers, but quite often in financial forecasting and valuation there are multiple options, each with tradeoffs and judgment calls. Damodaran often lays out the choices, discusses the pros and cons, and leaves it to the reader to decide among the alternatives. He does provide many applied examples, so the reader can see these sorts of judgment calls being repeatedly made and put into practice. The author's website at NYU provides a wealth of market and financial information, and he periodically updates this data. This is enormously useful if you are going to teach a class from this book, which I am planning to do.

The author follows common academic practice (following Modigliani and Miller) of discounting interest tax shields at the cost of debt rather than the unlevered cost of capital. It seems much of the industry treats these cash flows as riskier and uses the unlevered cost of capital for discounting. This approach is also consistent with a constant-growth capital structure, which is often assumed in modeling the firm's future cash flows. The McKinsey book takes this approach as do I in teaching Advanced Corporate Finance. But this is a minor complaint.

My chief complaint with the book is that it is replete with typos. Many of them are grammatical in nature (article missing, verb tense is wrong, sentence fragment) and, while irritating, are rather harmless. Others, however, involve equations or numbers and serve to impede or derail the reader's understanding. For example, in one chapter alone (Chapter 7), there are errors in equations on pages 158, 169, and 176. As a professor, I (usually) have the ability to recognize these sorts of errors, but students likely will not. For this reason, I am only giving four stars to what otherwise should be a five-star book.

Innovative, easy to use; beginners to professionals benefit

The third edition is a significant improvement. Chapters on Vision and on Budgeting have been added. Also, there is a Microsoft compatible disk of all the forms to make use easier. And, Wiley provides a downloadable site of PowerPoint slides to be used by anyone wishing to use the book as the basis for teaching planning to an organization.

It is probably the fault of the used book seller I used more than the book itself.
The book is really good, it was advertised with a CD and came with a diskette. Needless to say the diskette does not work therefore I am without the documents that should have been with the book. So I have to start from scratch.
Will probably invest in a different book and make sure that it has a CD not a diskette. I paid for a CD and am hugely disappointed.

PREFACE

The field of power electronics encompasses the application of fundamental concepts in several disciplines: electronic devices and circuits, signals and systems, motor drives, and control systems. A course in power electronics should tie together all these diverse fundamental concepts into a consolidated core and add the considerations of power utilization, quality, interfacing, and design issues, which are special to the field of power electronics. This book is written with the above focus in mind with a conscious effort to simplify mathematics by use of MATLAB™ and to concentrate on developing a robust understanding of the subject. This book is intended as a textbook for a course on power electronics for junior and senior undergraduate students in electrical engineering programs. It could also serve as a self-learning book for practicing engineers. The prerequisites for this book are courses on electrical circuits and systems, electronic devices and circuits, and mathematics courses in calculus, differential equations, Fourier series and transformations, and linear algebra.

This book, intended for a one- or two-semester course, is divided into four parts. Part I presents an overview of the field of power electronics and the review of important mathematical concepts such as determining the average and rms values and the harmonic profile of waveforms, which are essential for understanding the rest of the chapters.

Part II provides an understanding of components used in the design of power electronics circuits in the generic categories of power diodes, transistors, and thyristors. Design of current sources, inductors, and transformers illustrated using design examples. Concepts are introduced for power losses during switching transitions, and on-state and off-state of semiconductor devices. This part also introduces the driver and protection circuits for each device discussed.

Part III discusses the classes of switch-mode converters: dc-dc, dc-ac, ac-dc, ac-ac, and the resonant converters. The focus is on topologies, performance measures, and performance characteristics.

Part IV covers the application systems such as power factor correction, electric utility interfacing, converter control, power supply, electronic ballast, and motor drives. This part also presents practical design issues such as temperature control, selection of heat sinks, protection, packaging, shielding, and layout.

Each chapter contains several, design examples to reinforce the concept learned, which illustrate the decision choices and selection of components. MATLAB� has been used extensively in these examples and also in the elaboration of the converter operation. PSPICE� simulation examples are included wherever possible.

Chapters 1 and 2 provide review and focus on the characteristics of components used in power electronic circuits. Chapters 3 to 5, on semiconductor switching components, may be covered at a faster pace if students have a strong prerequisite in semiconductor devices. Chapters 6 to 11 form the core of the course. Chapters 12, 14, and 15 discuss the design requirements of some specific illustrations and, therefore, can be covered at a faster rate. Chapter 16 on thermal and other design issues, in my opinion, must not be excluded. Chapter 13 presents the development of average and statespace average models of power converter systems followed by the derivation of the transfer function. It is left to instructor's discretion whether to cover it in the undergraduate course or not.

I am happy to use this book as text in my power electronic class, a senior class in undergraduate engineering program. I like this book because it presents pictorial description of modes of operation of circuits. It makes it easier to understand the ensuing theory. Another great feature of this book is that it contains numerous MATLAB examples. This helps students to learn themselves beyond the class room. The book covers all aspects of power electronics subjects that should be covered in the undergraduate class. Although, the chapters on resonant converters and control modelling are more suited for graduate class. I particularly like the chapter on packaging and thermal design. I strongly recommend this book for the senior level undergraduate class.

Not a good buy

This textbook has several problems with the layout and editing that make it very difficult to understand. One of the areas that needs improvement is the diagrams and figures, which are printed with such poor quality that they are difficult to read. Also there are numerous instances were equations are printed with incorrect subscripts and supporting information; therefore, I think that this book would not be a good buy for students or anyone else for that matter.

The Authors: Andi Stein is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communications at California State University, Fullerton. She worked as a journalist and public relations practitioner for 16 years prior to entering academia and is the co-author of News Writing in a Multimedia World. Stein has a B.A. from George Washington University, an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.
Beth Bingham Evans is a full-time Lecturer in the Department of Communications at California State University, Fullerton. She began her career in television news and has more than 18 years experience as a reporter, anchor, and producer in markets in Southern California and Georgia. Pretty good basic overview, writing isn't exhilarating or unique.

I felt like most of the information, if not all, could be found in basic descriptions of different industries online. Still, it is an introductory book...so it does what it promises to do and explains things well for those who truly have no clue about the subjects within. For someone who wants a more in-depth introduction though, I'd recommend getting a different book.
