"The book was recommended by a friend Kigara Kamweru who is a lecturer in the school of the built environment at the University of Nairobi during a heated discussion of current housing developments in comparison to Buru Buru Estate
After reading the book I got a better appreciation on why Buru Buru, at least the 1st and 2nd phases, where laid out in distinct courts of a certain number of units (10 - 15) and why this format worked better in terms of social cohesion and security than newer developments where the entire development is along an artery.
The most interesting realisation after reading the book was why the Mathare slum is actually much safer than even Runda, all because of the cul-de-sac.
For the uninitiated the book might seem intimidating but it should be a must read for all planners especially know when Kenya moves to implement counties and the urban population is about to explode. "
