Groundbreaking Overview of Sex/Love Addiction and Recovery

This is a profound and important book which examines the very real, though often socially ignored, addiction to sex and love relationships. Because sex and romantic love are so highly touted in our culture, compulsive behaviors in this area are often overlooked, tolerated and even encouraged. As a psychotherapist I have found that this is often a primary addiction, underlying substance abuse, eating disorders, etc. It is based on the unmet need for genuine love and belonging (agape) missing in our families of origin and the culture at large..and the fundamental lack of self-love and self-acceptance that fails to develop as a result. Thus the endless search for that someone or something outside of ourselves that will be the balm to our loneliness and cure for our inner emptiness. The author brilliantly and poignantly chronicles the discovery and naming of his own addiction and the painful, though ultimately rewarding journey to wholeness and recovery. His chapter on withdrawal was incredibly powerful. I believe this was a book written before its time that deals with a fundamental human/societal problem..the myth that our happiness can be found outside of ourselves rather than within...and serves as a guide to those who have the courage to face themselves and walk through their pain out onto the other side.

Like the AA Big Book for SLAA

I became a member of SLAA (Sex And Love Addicts Anonymous) around 1988. This program saved my life. This book was a very important book to me, and all of us. Its writing was inspired by the man who founded SLAA (the way that Bill W and Dr. Bob founded AA) It has his story, and the stories of many other recovering Sex and Love Addicts, as well as a lot of theory and suggestions. It is not written for the lowest common denominator, as the originator was a Harvard graduate - but still, I never heard any of our members complain about its being hard to understand. The book is cleanly written and does not contain any obscenities. I am surprised that I didn't find any indication here at Amazon as the what this book really is - the core literature for SLAA - a 12-Step recovery program that still exists.

If you think you might have an addiction to sex and/or love - in any of its many forms - I recommend reading this book, and seeking out some meetings!

the process works

Have worked in the addictions field for over twenty years. This is often one of the underlying problems which, left unexamined, leads often to relapse on the substances of abuse. In fact, it is often THE basis for all the addictive behaviors. This book is an eye-opener for the addict who repeatedly relapses after FALLING (note lack of balance) in LOVE or after losing control of some sexual behavior. Format of the book is reminiscent of the "Big Book", Alcoholics Anonymous, which is not surprising since recovering alcoholics started this program thirty-some years ago. Highly recommended reading.

Walt Whitman spent twenty-five years as a journalist before he published his first book of poems. Mark Twain pursued a twenty-year career as a journalist before the publication of his first novel. The list of great imaginative writers whose careers began in journalism includes not only Whitman and Twain, but also Theodore Dreiser, Ernest Hemingway, and John Dos Passos, among others.
Fishkin's book--the first full-length study to examine this tradition in American letters--focuses on the lives and careers of Whitman, Twain, Dreiser, Hemingway, and Dos Passos, in order to discover the roots of their greatest imaginative works and the factors that led each writer to turn to fiction. Fishkin determines that they all turned to fiction because they wished to engage their readers in ways not possible through conventional journalism, and yet not one of them found his artistic stride until he returned, in new and creative ways, to the subjects and strategies first explored as a journalist.
Fishkin weaves together threads of biography, literary criticism, literary theory, and social history to reveal the neglected role journalism has played in shaping American literary tradition since the 1830s. Her final chapter examines the attitudes toward journalism and fiction, and the division between the two in the works of such contemporary fiction writers as Norman Mailer, John Hersey, and E.L. Doctorow.
Fishkin's probing examination of the poetry and fiction that followed the newspaper and magazine work of Whitman, Twain, Dreiser, Hemingway, and Dos Passos both reveals how each writer transformed fact into art and how journalism has helped to give a distinctively American cast to American literature.

Shelley Fisher Fishkin teaches American Studies at the University of Texas in Austin and was Director of the Poynter Fellowship in Journalism at Yale University where she also taught American Literature.

Sharply informative, original and engaging

Truth in reviewing: I am proud to have once known the author in high school, but that was a distant time, another place. It is coincidental that she has become a preeminent interpreter of our literary and cultural heritage and I have become a consumer of her kind of information. I would have picked up this book and enjoyed it no matter who wrote it.

Originally published in 1989, the award-winning FROM FACT TO FICTION remains a fresh and original study of five major American literary figures who leaped the seeming divide between journalism and imaginative writing: Whitman, Twain, Dreiser, Hemingway and Dos Passos. Of the five, all but Dos Passos began as journalists committed to telling the truth of human experience and then went on to find another way to tell it through poetry and fiction. Dos Passos, the Harvard graduate who was producing fiction and poetry all along, really did not come into his own with the USA trilogy until after his magazine career covering Spain and, especially, the Sacco and Vanzetti case. Against a back drop of American journalism history, the author closely reads how factual reporting influenced the writers' later imaginative work. In the epilogue, she contemplates that while journalistic techniques have successfully contributed to some of our enduring creative literature, the pursuit of truth has not been served by journalists who invented stories and tried to pass them off as factual. The Janet Cook scandal had recently broken when the book was written.

The author is a gifted writer who adheres to the rigor of scholarship but writes engagingly in a way that general readers can enjoy. She understands that our American literary heritage belongs to everyone. Her reading of the classics brings them closer and stirs wonder. She currently teaches at Stanford University. A leading Mark Twain scholar, she discovered his lost play, "Is He Dead?" and has, at the time of this writing, co-produced it on Broadway to critical acclaim.

We cannot deny the importance of checklist on how some things needed to be done. They ensure that you carry out each item in the list without missing a thing and jeopardize whatever you are doing. This book, is a fast checklist generator, for those managers new and not so new alike. It ensures that you have all the essentials done and not jeopardize your tasks, nor your reputation in the end.

I have developed my own checklist based on the chapters of this book which i keep in handy, to refer back too.

Written in a straight forward, no merry-go-round and straight-to-work language, i find this book very helpfull and saves me alot of time. I have this book for almost 2 years now. And it is still my favorite reference. THe chapters are not required to be read in sequence of the book. You can read it in the sequence of life-as-a-manager.

FOr new managers, buy this book. You will not regret it.

Dr. Kurtz is currently Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Factor Chair in Molecular Nephrology at UCLA. He is a professor of Medicine in the David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Kurtz received his medical training and residency training at the University of Toronto. He completed his Nephrology fellowship at UCSF and a postdoctoral fellowship at the NIH. Dr. Kurtz has been on faculty at UCLA since 1985.

important but too often overlooked topic

Univariate probability distributions are often used in simulations and there are many books that cover ways to generate random values from specific distributions or families of distributions. This book is unique in that it does the same thing for multivariate distributions with various statistical properties.

I found it very useful to take the Pearson VII family of distributions and use Mark Johnson's techniques for generation of multivariate observations with elliptically shaped contours. Looking at a one parameter family of distributions where the tail behavior is controlled by the parameter was something that I found to be useful in comparing bootstrap estimates of classification error rates in simulation studies.
