Leaden Re-Translation of a Classic Turkish Novel Originally Published in English

First published in English in 1935 and translated into Turkish a year later, THE CLOWN AND HIS DAUGHTER is a seminal novel chronicling the last days of the Ottoman Empire and the turmoil that ensued involving the Young Turk revolution and its aftermath.

The basic story-line is set around a small grocer's shop in Istanbul, focusing on a feckless owner Tefvik and his wife Emine. Emine gives birth to a daughter Rabia; as Tefvik cannot manager the shop adequately, Emine takes over; but grows so frustrated with her husband that she eventually leaves him. Meanwhile Rabia grows up into a woman educated according to Islamic rules, as mediated through Ottoman interpretations. Tefvik leaves the grocer's shop and becomes a famous actor specializing in Karagoz, the ancient Turkish shadow-play. When he returns to the grocer's, he has become intimately involved in the politics of the time; the story unfolds as a conflict between personal and political values, with the Karagoz reminding us of the presence of the spiritual life transcending worldly values, a life that Rabia passionately believes in.

Adivar's narrative unfolds discursively, with several pauses for reflection on the ontological status of the characters in a fast-changing world. This is no bad thing, as it reminds us of the ways in which modern Turkish literature differs from its western equivalents, with the onward focus of a western narrative here sacrificed for a more reflective mode of storytelling, relating the characters more directly to corporeal and incorporeal worlds.

Given the significance of the novel, it's sad to report that W. D. Halsey's translation is particularly leaden, full of awkward phraseology and strange linguistic constructions. As THE CLOWN AND HIS DAUGHTER was originally published in English, we wonder why the publishers thought it necessary to commission a new translation from the Turkish, given that the Turkish was itself a translation of the original English. Re-rendering a novel twice over seems a particularly redundant activity. Readers would be better advised to trawl the lists of secondhand bookshops in Turkey and elsewhere to find a copy of Adivar's 1936 text if they should want to understand how seminal the story actually is.

Beautiful but translated twice so the soul is washed out.

Because it was translated from English to Turkish and then BACK to English, the story seemed thin. I hope I can someday read the original because what little remains after being washed out from translation to translation is still intriguing.

This is merely a word-list, with one to a handful of one-word translations, from English to Russian. The words are ordered alphabetically (NOT by order of frequency, this is NOT a frequency list) and I honestly don't know how many are included.

Since the book dos not include example sentences, it is pretty much useless. It does not include information about stress either.

If you're setting up an SQA function for enterprise processes and measurement this book is an invaluable resource that describes the major quality approaches, and gives excellent advice on metrics collection and analysis.
The major quality approaches discussed are ISO 9000, SPICE and CMM. The chapters devoted to these give a basis for comparing and selecting either a single approach, or taking the best processes and characteristics from each and developing your own approach. One nice aspect is the coverage of the ISO 9000:2000 standard, which differs from many books which only cover TickIT or the older 1996 standard that is missing the important emphasis on measuring customer satisfaction.
More general chapters that apply to all quality frameworks are the introduction to software quality, which covers the major issues and factors (as well as distinguishing SQA from testing), and metrics and problem solving. I especially liked the latter because the material goes beyond projects and product development to include the full spectrum of life cycle milestones.
In addition, inspections and testing, and formal methods and design are described in depth and placed into the context of an encompassing quality initiative.

Not what the Teacher Ordered

This book oddly enough was not formatted in a way similar to other books,with same edition and code numbers and was also missing a "key card" which was needed to access important info needed for the class.We ended up donating the book so it could be used as a resource book by other students at my daughters high school.We then had to purchase the book with the key card from the schools bookstore.I think that if a book is to be sold that requires an active key card that that should be a stated fact so the buyer can beware.I had no idea that books required keycards as this is a fairly new practice.The keycard if bought seperately cost nearly as much as the book.

I've been studying Spanish intensively for the past two years and find this particular text to be the best I have used so far. The focus is on conversation rather than just grammar, the exercises are effective, the mix of exercises is entertaining, the explanations and examples are very clear, the exposures to Latin American literature and geography are informative, and even the illustrations contribute to making this an interesting and useful text.

Swift Programming Masterpiece

This book is really a masterpiece. Reminds me of other advanced books from years ago like Effective C++ and Effective Perl Programming. It contains such great explanations of the advanced features of the language and is strictly committed to an idiomatic Swift syntax--highlighting key differences between Swift and other languages that really set Swift apart. I have been doing Swift development from day one and haven't looked back--yet this book has filled in many gaps in my understanding that I didn't realize were there. When I read the chapter on optionals for example, I thought I would just breeze through it since I knew everything about them--or so I thought. I was wrong. Lots of really good insight in that chapter alone. And it just gets better from there.

I am giving the book 5 stars based on the content alone since it is so rich. I will, however, mention and this is more of a shame-on-you in the publishing realm--there are widows and orphans in the code snippets. A code block will begin with a single line at the end of one page (widow) and complete on the next page (forcing me to flip back and forth to get the gist of the snippet). Or the code block will almost all finish on one page and one line will appear on the next (orphan). I realize this is a nit and I can live with it, but I would get that fixed in the publishing for a future release as it would improve the experience.

Last point--and this is more of a general complaint about Kindle books. While it was nice that I was able to get the Kindle version for free here on Amazon after purchasing the print version, the code layout in Kindle is (still) abysmal. It's very challenging to read code coherently. I started reading the book on the Kindle since I was able to download it and start reading immediately, but I kept running into issues trying to read the code examples and just gave up--preferring to wait for the print version to arrive. Amazon really needs to figure out the disconnect between the correctly formatted content technical book writers provide and the Kindle output of code. It's my experience that most (if not all) Kindle formatted technical books are this way. It's a shame this hasn't been resolved. It's not like this is a new problem.

I'm a bit torn. The book has some amazing content. But it makes for quite a hard read as the difficulty level varies dramatically from page to page. I feel as if the authors got tired of explaining things at low levels at times and just said "screw it, we'll just hope they understand."
