proofreading is important, but still a fun, easy read

I would have loved to give this book more stars but I'm a stickler for the little things. I found quite a few errors with spelling, grammar, tense changes, missing words or extra words and that detracts from my reading enjoyment. The storyline was good but unfortunately all of the editing errors detracted from it. In my opinion, the book needed some extra polishing before going to publication. I will probably still seek out the other books in this series in hopes that they get better.

Procured Books 1-3 together and read them as one novel. It was a lovely quick read which I enjoyed thoroughly. Nice storyline with just enough tension to keep you on your toes and by the way, I hope Brandon rots in hell. That part is unfortunately to close to reality and we all know it happens to women all over the world (present company excluded thank you Lord)! Well done Victoria! Luv, Linda - South Africa

Extremely poor book, with few redeeming qualities

As unity programmer interested on iOS development, I bought this book based on the title alone. I thought it might save me some time and, at least, give me some pointers to get me up to speed fast on Unity for iOS development.

There are a few useful tips throughout the book. However the book isn't worth it.

Unbelievably poor writing. Erratas. Duplication of content. Confusing examples. Headers that have little to do with the actual content. I could go on forever ...

There are few good books on Unity, most of the are pretty bad. But this is one of the worst.

Most of the content is completely random and unrelated to iOS development (ie. tricks to avoid Z-fighting, setting a fly-by camera, setting up car physics with JCar ...). Half of the code examples is pasted from forum examples, and not even explained!

To make things worst. It doesn't explain ANY of the tricky to implement iOS features! (iAds, Game Center, multi-touch, social networks, iCoud, StoreKit, Media Player, Location, ...)

Focused book: It's for Unity on iOS

Packt provided me with a free copy of this eBook, and I was totally happy to give it a review! Unity is a strong interest of mine, and programming for an iOS device seems like the logical direction to start making actual commercial games. I feel like limitation drives creativity, and by limiting the power of the device your game runs on, you can really get to the heart of the gameplay.

So, on to the book itself!

Overall, I found its style incredibly informative, but a bit disjointed. It felt like I was sitting down with a programmer who has a lot of experience in iOS. This programmer would give some great technical insight, then digress onto some side topic about dungeons or health packs, then give another bit of technical advice.

For what it is, though, the book is very valuable. If you're considering developing for iOS, but afraid of falling into a `newbie trap', Unity iOS Essentials will quickly give you some red flags and some things to reconsider. A cloth cape? Not going to happen! A button that highlights on mouseover? What mouse?

A lot of time is spent discussing UIs, and making them slide and feel good. It might seem like a frivolous topic, but getting the `touch' of an iOS device is critical. Your game has to feel like it belongs on the platform, and I was glad that Wiebe spent a good deal of time on the topic.

I'm not entirely sure how this book would work as a beginner's book; I didn't go through all the code, but it appears that there's a complete game in here. Nevertheless, the tone definitely assumes you know a bit about Unity programming already, and you're just looking to make the jump to iOS. Unless you have a real desire and immediate opportunity to create an iOS game, you won't get very much out of this.

To summarize, I liked the book as an in-depth exploration of the quirks of Unity programming on the iOS! I look forward to the time when I'll be ready to do an iOS game, and I can put all the information in Unity iOS Essentials to good use.

A bit disorganized iOS education for unity veterans

If you have unity and feel like trying your luck on the iOS market (iphone, ipad), you might want to take a look at this book. It covers the major pitfalls and offers workarounds, as well as giving ballpark figures of what kind of content the devices can handle.

The book does a good job at educating the reader about what's different in developing for a handheld, with its limitations and different controls.

On the negative side, the book could be slightly better organized. As it is, it seems to jump back and forth between really useful information and game design advice which does not necessarily apply to any kind of game. The book also talks about the making of a couple different kinds of games, explaining issues related to them, but could have benefited from a bare-bones example that would have explained the whole development flow.

So, if you're a unity veteran, and want a reference that covers the limitations and workarounds of the iOS target platform(s), this book might be for you.

Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist residing near San Diego, California. About the Author

Sabra Waldfogel grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but has always been fascinated by the drama of slavery and freedom in the South, before and after the Civil War. She studied history at Harvard University and received her PhD in American history from the University of Minnesota. Since then, she has worked as a technical writer and has written about historic architecture for Old House Journal and Arts and Crafts Homes. Waldfogel’s short story “Yemaya” appeared in Sixfold’s Winter 2013 fiction issue. In her free time, she collects and sells antiques with her husband. Sister of Mine is her first novel.

History is personal

As a former history teacher, I appreciate well-researched historical fiction. Since so many readers rely on Gone with the Wind as their template for slave owners, it's refreshing to find a book with multi-faceted
characters among the planter class, the slaves, and non slaveholding whites. In addition, to discover a book that
embeds the particular dilemma for Jewish slaveholders is a true find. In Sabra Waldfogel's novel, history does not trump the story line and the rhythm of the book. She is able to contextualize the story with a newspaper reference or a tidbit of gossip heard in town. If you are knowledgable about the Civil War battles, you'll be able to track the
course of the war through Henry's letters home to Rachel. The characters in the book are faced with the dilemmas of survival like every southern family during the Civil War but they also confront ethical dilemmas. We are privy to their deliberations and their thought process without any anachronistic rationales seeping into their 19th century minds.
Jew or Christian, black or white, northerner or southerner, male or female--any reader will close this book with not just more knowledge, but with greater understanding of the chaos and traumas engendered by slavery in the US.

For historical fiction fans!

This will be one of my favorites for the year. A Goodreads friend recommended it to me. She said it was a self published book, and hadn't been advertised. The story is of 2 sisters, both daughters of the Master of a cotton plantation. One born to the mistress of the house, the other to a slave. The owners of the plantation are Jewish, and the story explores slavery in Egypt to slavery in the south. It's a beautiful tale of love and hardship, one that creates characters with depth. If you enjoyed The Kitchen House or The Invention Of Wings, you'll want to read this!

A Powerful, Complex and Multilayered Love Story

This is a powerful, fast-paced story of plantation life in Georgia around the time of the Civil War. It is well-researched and highly detailed. The central characters are complex and fully developed. There are several “Whoa! I didn’t see that coming” moments, but, on reflection, the reader sees that these pieces of the plot were very carefully crafted and fit neatly into place.

The novel deals with the unrelenting brutality of slavery. There are certainly references to beatings, mutilations and rapes, but the focus here is on the ordinary lives of people – black and white – who lived through these times and were shaped by them. Families, children, lovers, soldiers, slaves and slave owners, merchants and poor farmers all play their roles here.

The fact that several of the main characters are German Jews who became slave owners adds a fascinating sub-text to the story.

At the end of this wonderful read, the thought comes: “Is this plausible? Would people living in such circumstances at that time, in rural Georgia, really act like this?” If those questions arise, it may be useful to remember that reality is not always determined by what is plausible.

This is a MUST read!

If you are going to read only one book this year, read this one!

I have been a Christian for most of my life. This book changed the way I looked at a lot of things. The way Glory is explained was profound to me. For the first time I got it why so many people struggle with addiction and spend a life time pursuing things that cannot truly satisfy them. The description of Grace should be taught in every Bible-believing church. It has been my observation that this is too often misunderstood.

So what is the question

Everyday I talk to people who are perplexed by the challenges that they face in life. They lack insight and as life has gotten more complex their frustrations and fears mount. This book, so short that even men are reading it in large numbers, answers some of the basic questions of life.

The Answer focuses on three fundamental truths of life so often overlooked. These truths are summarized as, Glory, Grace and Truth. As Randy Pope unpacks these words in a fresh and interesting way you will come to an understanding that could dramatically change your life. You will come to see that there really are reasonable and truthful answers to your questions.

I know the author and I can tell you he has captured in this book, answers that will absolutely make you think deeper about the one thing that we are consumed with, how can I have satisfaction in life? Read this book and in addition to answering your questions, it will give you the confidence to speak to the fears and questions that your friends have in their lives. If you want a lifelong marriage, get this book!

As a life long marriage counselor, Steve Arterburn developed this book to help people find their mate and develop a solid relationship that will last a lifetime. This is not a book of lists that couples work through so that they get to know each other better, this is a series of dates for the couple to go on where they learn more about each other. He begins by suggesting that the couple look around at others prior to making a commitment, to make sure that they haven't just fallen into a relationship by just getting comfortable with each other. He suggests ways to meet new people, and activities, calling these meetings Take-A-Break Dates. He says that a person should date at least twenty people before making a commitment to one person. He gives a list of the type of people you should avoid when dating. Then once you have decided on a particular person, he moves to ten dates with a specific agenda. Each date `gives you and your potential mate a change to experience each other in not-so-ordinary settings that provide extraordinary insight into each other." The dates occur in different settings that allow the participants to have experiences that potentially duplicate stress situations that might occur in a marriage and potentially cause a rift. This way, the couple encounters problems prior to marriage.

I love this book. I will definitely purchase one for my daughters. I think that if a couple seriously commits to working through this book, they will develop a stronger marriage that has a greater potential to last a lifetime. Every person that would like to have a lifelong committed relationship should read this book.

I bought this book for my grand daughter who was serious about a certain young man. Apparently, it is very good because she is no longer involved with him. I did not have to say anything. Amen.

Great book! For a single guy who is frustrated with dating and trying to do it Gods way, I highly recommmend this book, I think if more people approached dating this way there would be alot less divorce in the country!! Great read for college students to adults!

Makes One Think

I am always interested in things that are out of the ordinary, especially that which has to do with our minds. But I am also a skeptical person. In the case of this book of psychic stories, I found the things that happened to the author to be quite credible. Not like someone trying to put something over on a reader. The guy that wrote WHERE DO DEAD PEOPLE LIVE would probably be very interesting to talk to. He probably has even more stories than the ones in the book. And, according to things he says about his history, he must be quite old by now. Anyway, I will certainly look for any other books he writes. Nice and clear also. I like that! I’d like to know what he thinks is behind all those things he wrote about, like Spirit or God. I look foreward to the next book in the series.

About the Author
Bruce G. Trigger is James McGill Professor in the Department of Anthropology at McGill University. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University and has carried out archaeological research in Egypt and the Sudan. His current interests include the comparative study of early civilizations, the history of archaeology, and archaeological and anthropological theory. He has received various scholarly awards, including the prestigious Prix Leon-Gerin from the Quebec government, for his sustained contributions to the social sciences. He is an honorary fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and an honorary member of the Prehistoric Society (UK). His numerous books include The Children of Aataentsic: A History of the Huron People to 1660 (1976), A History of Archaeological Thought (Cambridge 1989), Early Civilizations: Ancient Egypt in Context (1993), and Sociocultural Evolution (1998), and The Cambridge History of the Native Peoples of the Americas, Volume 1 (Cambridge 1996), co-edited with Wilcomb E. Washburn.

As good as it gets

This weighty book is superb reading. It covers the short and tragic history of the Huron people of the eastern great lakes from prehistory to their first contacts with the French in the early 17th century to their destruction as an independent people by Iroquois raids in 1649.
For anyone interested in the early contacts between native peoples and Europeans, the very early fur trade, early missionaries in the Americas, the conflict between new religions and old traditions this is essential reading.
