Robert Wiebe has been developing games for more than 30 years. He has a Bachelors degree in Computer Science from Simon Fraser University. He has been a professional software developer for more than 25 years, developing software used by major corporations including Motorola and Hewlett Packard. His game development company, BurningThumb Software, has developed and released games using the Torque Game Engine, the Cocos2D game engine and the Unity3D game engine for desktop and iOS platforms.

Extremely poor book, with few redeeming qualities

As unity programmer interested on iOS development, I bought this book based on the title alone. I thought it might save me some time and, at least, give me some pointers to get me up to speed fast on Unity for iOS development.

There are a few useful tips throughout the book. However the book isn't worth it.

Unbelievably poor writing. Erratas. Duplication of content. Confusing examples. Headers that have little to do with the actual content. I could go on forever ...

There are few good books on Unity, most of the are pretty bad. But this is one of the worst.

Most of the content is completely random and unrelated to iOS development (ie. tricks to avoid Z-fighting, setting a fly-by camera, setting up car physics with JCar ...). Half of the code examples is pasted from forum examples, and not even explained!

To make things worst. It doesn't explain ANY of the tricky to implement iOS features! (iAds, Game Center, multi-touch, social networks, iCoud, StoreKit, Media Player, Location, ...)

Focused book: It's for Unity on iOS

Packt provided me with a free copy of this eBook, and I was totally happy to give it a review! Unity is a strong interest of mine, and programming for an iOS device seems like the logical direction to start making actual commercial games. I feel like limitation drives creativity, and by limiting the power of the device your game runs on, you can really get to the heart of the gameplay.

So, on to the book itself!

Overall, I found its style incredibly informative, but a bit disjointed. It felt like I was sitting down with a programmer who has a lot of experience in iOS. This programmer would give some great technical insight, then digress onto some side topic about dungeons or health packs, then give another bit of technical advice.

For what it is, though, the book is very valuable. If you're considering developing for iOS, but afraid of falling into a `newbie trap', Unity iOS Essentials will quickly give you some red flags and some things to reconsider. A cloth cape? Not going to happen! A button that highlights on mouseover? What mouse?

A lot of time is spent discussing UIs, and making them slide and feel good. It might seem like a frivolous topic, but getting the `touch' of an iOS device is critical. Your game has to feel like it belongs on the platform, and I was glad that Wiebe spent a good deal of time on the topic.

I'm not entirely sure how this book would work as a beginner's book; I didn't go through all the code, but it appears that there's a complete game in here. Nevertheless, the tone definitely assumes you know a bit about Unity programming already, and you're just looking to make the jump to iOS. Unless you have a real desire and immediate opportunity to create an iOS game, you won't get very much out of this.

To summarize, I liked the book as an in-depth exploration of the quirks of Unity programming on the iOS! I look forward to the time when I'll be ready to do an iOS game, and I can put all the information in Unity iOS Essentials to good use.

A bit disorganized iOS education for unity veterans

If you have unity and feel like trying your luck on the iOS market (iphone, ipad), you might want to take a look at this book. It covers the major pitfalls and offers workarounds, as well as giving ballpark figures of what kind of content the devices can handle.

The book does a good job at educating the reader about what's different in developing for a handheld, with its limitations and different controls.

On the negative side, the book could be slightly better organized. As it is, it seems to jump back and forth between really useful information and game design advice which does not necessarily apply to any kind of game. The book also talks about the making of a couple different kinds of games, explaining issues related to them, but could have benefited from a bare-bones example that would have explained the whole development flow.

So, if you're a unity veteran, and want a reference that covers the limitations and workarounds of the iOS target platform(s), this book might be for you.
